Body Tag Analyzer
Use our web application that deciphers your First Generation Firebird Body Tag (also known as the Cowl Tag). You enter the information from your Body Tag and have the application tell you what was originally on your car. The form has preset information so you can test the application if you don't have your information. If you want to decipher the information yourself, use the information below to help you.

Select a Year:

Code Information
Time Built Code:
Located above the "ST" letters. Indicates the week of the month the car was made and which week the car was assembled. (09A = September, 1st week)
Model Year:
Located to the right of the "ST" letters. Indicates the model year.
Division Series:
Located to the right of the Model Year digits. Indicates the division, model, series, and body style. This number matches the first five digits of the V.I.N. on all 1967-71 models. (22367 = Pontiac (2), Firebird (23), Convertible (67))
Note: The Firebird designation (23) on the body tag could be 24 (Std. Interior) or 26 (Cus. Interior) on the 1967-68 which indicated "Custom Trim Option #554". Then, this body tag designation will not match the VIN which will still be 23.
Assembly Plant Code:
Located to the right of the Division Series digits. Indicates which plant the car was manufactured (LOS = Van Nuys, California; LOR = Lordstown, Ohio).
Consecutive Build Number:
Located to the right of the Assembly Plant Code. It is the consecutive body build number and indicates the sequence the car came off the assembly line. This number will not match the actual sequential VIN number.
Paint Code:
Located below the Assembly Plant Code. The 2 letter code indicates the body color, or which upper and lower colors were used on a 2-tone paint option, or what color an optional stripe, convertible top, or vinyl top was ordered. (Y2 = Mayfair Maize lower, Black folding top) (NOTE: Custom Factory Paint is indicated by '----', 'SPEC', or 'special')
(Exterior Finish Samples)
Trim Code:
Located to the left of the Paint Code. The 3 digit code indicates the color the interior is and what style and material the seat was made from. (259 = Custom Option Vinyl)
(Trim Samples)
Miscellaneous Codes:
There are sometimes codes on the body tag that most tags do not have on them. Some of the information for these codes can be found on the Code Information FAQs page. Some of the codes are still being researched since few factory records have turned up.

NOTES:
1. These colors are as a near match as I could get using your browser's color pallet. You will want to view this at "Millions of Colors" (16 bits). Due to limitations with differing monitor capabilities, these color representations may not match the manufacturer's specifications exactly.

2. Custom Factory Paint is indicated by dashes (----), 'SPEC', or 'special' on your bodytag. Pink Mist, Carnival Red, Marigold Yellow, and Windward Blue are some examples offered.
