Pontiac Sets Entry Date For Sports Car Models Pontiac Motor Division of General Motors has scheduled a February introduction for the Firebird, its entry in the sports car field. Named after a legendary Indian symbol which promised action, power, beauty and youth, the Firebird will be available in two styles, a hardtop coupe and convertible. The new series goes on sale Feb. 23. Five engines will be offered, including the Pontiac overhead camshaft six-cylinder engine as standard and up to the optional 400 cubic-inch V-8. Standard equipment are bucket seats, three-speed manual transmission with four-speed manual and two-speed and three-speed automatic optional; all-vinyl interior trims and the safety items previously announced on 1967 Pontiacs. The Pontiac entry is the 12th in the sports car field which blossomed into a million-car market following the introduction of Ford's Mustang in 1964. |
