I didn't have to make any special cuts at all. I would suggest if you go with the Mega Shifter you might want to go with the console unit, the shift arm is about 2" shorter. I didn't and kinda wished I had. Not that mine didn't turn out great, I think it would look a little cooler with the shorter arm. (back) Subject: Tachometer info From: "Frank Zeller" <fzeller@tri-austin.com> Date: Wed, 03 Jan 2001 12:45:08 -0600     In my quest to have an indash tachometer I have learned a lot. Someone = mentioned that a repro hood tachometer had the light on all the time. One = or the other possible reason for this, besides to reduce condensation = problems, is that the repro tachometers have an amplifier circuit that = requires 12 volts so they can work with points or with HEI ignitions. The = repro tachs amplifier might get the power from the light circuit and = wiring instructions tell you to plug the light circuit into the ACC on you = fuse box? The original tach units up until around 1972 are passive (no = external power just the puls from the coil power up and down) and do not = work with an HEI unless you build an amplifying circuit. I was told that = up side of adding this circuit to you original tachometer is that the tach = responses quicker and can be easily calibrated with a squarewave signal = generator.     100 HZ 750 RPM (V8) 200 HZ 1500 RPM 400 HZ 3000 RPM 800 HZ 6000 RPM   see web link for circuit   www2.gdi.net/~padgett/ttach.htm   I have also found an AC Service Bulletin on Tachometer repair that I can = scan if anybodies interested.       Frank

(back) Subject: HELP! Rear '68 shocks surprise! From: "Chuck Sellers" <chuck_sellers@hotmail.com> Date: Wed, 3 Jan 2001 13:28:34 -0800   Fellow Firebird Enthusiasts,   While Hugo and I were struggling this past weekend with replacing my rear leafs and shocks (darn rust!) we ran across an interesting problem. I = bought some KYB gas-adjust rear shocks (KYB model KG5521) from Ames Performance = for my '68 and lo and behold they did not come with mounts (top/trunk mount part) that were the same as the currently installed shocks. The old shocks had a metal "T" bracket on top that took two bolts, one on each side to mount them but the KYB shocks that I received have a single shaft with threads at the top for a single bolt. We took a look at a '68 donor parts car that Hugo had and it was set up the same way. His is a coupe and mine = is a convertible.   I called Doug at Ames Performance and he re-checked his KYB application chart and he confirmed that the KG5521 was the correct shock for '68 rear shocks. He looked at his '68 bird and said that his mount is the single shaft type without the "T" mounting bracket.   WAS THERE AN EARLY '68 AND LATE '68 THAT USED DIFFERENT SHOCKS? DO I NEED = TO GET SHOCKS FOR A '67 OR A '69 OR SOMETHING STRANGE IN BETWEEN???   Thanks in advance for your input!   Chuck Sellers '68 350 convertible

(back) Subject: ADMN: Changes to List From: "Geoff Martin" <Geoff@firstgenfirebird.org> Date: Wed, 3 Jan 2001 17:23:58 -0500   Unfortunately, AOL 6.0 is causing a few changes for this list which I usually do not worry about since a small part of the our community is usually affected. With AOL being the largest provider, I have to unfortunately conform to what they do even if it is not a standard protocol.   Since AOL 6.0 can not send the STANDARD plain text messages, I am working on a solution which involves allowing custom markup text or AOL text. The downside of this, anyone using older software or some of the online versions will get extra text or encoding in their messages. I am one of them affected since I love the program I use now and have not found a 'modern' email software package to upgrade to.   I am testing a new format for everyone on the digest version (MIME encoding). I will be monitoring feedback but would like to hear directly rather than through the list to anyone having problems with the new format. If this version of the digest works, I will modify the list scripts/processor to allow 'HTML' or custom encoding so anyone using AOL 6.0 can send messages to the list.   Anyone not on the digest version (you receive every message), you should not be affected by this change at this time. Once the script/processor is changed to allow HTML or special encoding, you may see the custom encoding in every text. I will have this problem with my software but mine is about 5 years old. If you encounter this problem, you will have to update to a more 'modern' email software package or scroll though the extra text.   Everyone using AOL 6.0, stay tuned for when the changes to the mailing list take place so you can send messages. I understand it is frustrating but I need to make sure the masses are not negatively affect by the changes for AOL's abuse of the internet messaging STANDARD (Jumping off my box).   As always, Thanks! - Geoff <Geoff@firstgenfirebird.org>   ps - Back from my departure from the list messaging.
