You'll still have to use masking tape. What I did was spray the spokes and rim with the silver and let it dry overnight. Then, use two = inch masking take (3M blue is good stuff) to mask off the silver spokes and hub area. Use a razor to follow the embossed ridge around the spoke and wheel and remove everything that's to be painted charcoal. That's it. Simple. To save on tape, I used aluminum foil around the rim. I really can't see how the stencil could save you any time. (back) Subject: Re: 67 firebird From: "Michael Howell" <fishgod@iglou.com> Date: Thu, 01 Feb 2001 18:11:56 -0500 Matt- Welcome to the list! Try the following sites for 'birds for = sale... www.hemmings.com www.classiccartraderonline.com www.classicalpontiac.com (they have a "Classifieds" link at the bottom) www.ebaymotors.com (if you're adventurous.. I bought a '63 GP that way and it went fine) Also check your local newspaper and any auto classified papers that may be = there - bookstores usually have a good selection of them. As far as the condition of the car you get, just be careful. Take your time and look over every bit of the car to see exactly what you're going = to have to work on. I'm assuming you're new to the collector car hobby so if = you'd like some pointers on selecting a good restoration project check the = archives and ask away. In my opinion, it's best to shop for sheet metal - = get the most rust-free, straight example you can afford and go from there. That's just because I'd end up paying someone to do body work and that adds up quickly. One of the great things about these cars is parts availability - just about any part you need is around, or someone here can = help you get it. Good luck! I just drove a 1976 GMC motorhome today that was restored about 8 years ago, and the right caliper hung up - stank like crazy after only 1/2 mile. Glenn aka birdman
(back) Subject: Re: Rear-End From: "Glenn Uettwiller" <birdman@gdi.net> Date: Thu, 01 Feb 2001 20:34:06 -0500 John, try this on for size: Get under the car with something to mark 3 places. Tape, chalk, crayon, anything. Mark a spot on the yoke and the axle housing next to the yoke. Do the same with each brake backing plate, and on each rear drum. Rotate the wheels exactly one full turn, and count how far the yoke goes around. (A posi makes this a bit easier.) If it travels just a shade over 2-1/2 turns, it's a 2.56. If it turns just a bit over 3 turns, it's likely a 3.08. If 3-1/4 turns, a 3.23. I think this is enough to give everybody a simple picture of how to do this. He has several projects to show off. Meeting time will be 1:30 PM, Sunday, Feb 4. He then suggested we cruise to Campbell to the Happy Days Hamburger joint. That's less than 10 miles from his shop. Here is a list of attendees that I'm aware of: Geoff Swavley (from Australia) Hugo Bob Cisneros Al Rojas Brady Esch Dave Smith (from Austin, TX) Mike (last name?) Eric Toledo - maybe Chuck Sellers - out of town
