(back) Subject: Adhesives/Caulking From: "Steve Miller" <sjmiller@us.ibm.com> Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2001 09:11:28 -0700     Howdy, I've been lurking on the list for a month since Andy steered me towards a '68 Sprint convertible that I picked up for $2k. Been busy = since stripping the interior, cleaning up and using por on floorpans and the trunk, removing rust, making Ames and CI wealthier, etc. I've finally got a question for the list that I haven't seen discussed yet.   There appear to be several different kinds of pliable caulks and/or sealants used in the interior. I am curious what others have used as replacements for these. A couple of examples:   1) The kick panel vent housing is sealed to the sheetmetal with a thick bead of a light grey pliable (after 30+years!) caulk the consistency of = old gum.   2) Interior seams (above floorpans, etc) have a coating of a tar-like black coating (semi-pliable) that looks brushed on originally. Looks = like this stuff also possibly acted as a sound deadener.   3) The floor pan drain plugs were originally sealed in with a white = fairly non-pliable caulk.   4) The seat tracks were mounted down with what appears to be a black = gummy adhesive. Could this be because the seats were originally mounted on top of the tar paper, or was a separate adhesive used there?   Any suggestions for these areas are greatly appreciated!   Regards, Steve   "Breaking this seal implies that you have read this manual, and are therefore obligated to provide support to anyone who doesn't want to read this manual." - Illiad

What confuses me = is >that it appears that the ZB code is a 2.56 ratio for 6's and 350s w/o = air >conditioning.   There is some contradiction between the Service Manual, and the Sales Album,   <http://FirstGenFirebird.org/firebird/1968/sales_manual/O-chart1.html>   which indicates that the 2.56 ratio was in fact standard for a 400 HO equipped with air and a Hydromatic transmission. It isn't unusual for errors to occur in Pontiac publications, when changes to standard equipment came too late to include before the printing deadline.   You seem to have a good case for the Sales Album to be correct, given your long history with the car. You should check your PHS documentation to verify the original axle code for this car. You do have this, don't you?   It is always possible that whatever the standard ratio or axle type might be, the car was ordered with something different, but didn't make it to the window sticker. This is where the billing history or build sheet comes in handy.     >I guess I'll know for sure if I open the differential >and count teeth? But, is there a way to tell short of that?   Not really. The method of chalking the tire and drive shaft and then counting rotations will only give you an approximation. Given that you are trying to tell a 2.56 from a 2.78, this won't get you close enough.   Since I'll bet you've never changed the lube in the 32 years of ownership, isn't now a good time to drain the tire old oil out of tha axle, assuming there is any left, and adding fresh lube? Then you can verify the ratio and diff. type. It really isn't that hard. A little messy perhaps. But you can get it done faster than an engine oil change.   -BoB San Jose, CA 1968 convertible bob.cisneros@Sun.COM

(back) Subject: Re: Rant... From: "ROY D LUMSDEN" <rlumsden@tampabay.rr.com> Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2001 18:46:06 -0400   The axing of the Firebird and Camaro from big brother GM would really be = no surprise to me. GM is a "bottom line" company and has lost what it means = to have a "vision". They proved that to me when the decided to cut the Fiero. Scoff if you will but the car was something special that all Pontiac fans should be proud of. This car was the ONLY mid engine car EVER produced in the US and it has the Pontaic badge. Yes, it used some parts from other = cars but so did our beloved Firebird (say Camaro). When sales started to sag, instead of improving on the car and building on it's image, GM axed it = using the excuse that they were loosing money and that it was a good experiment but not cost effective to produce.   Then, they got on the Saturn hype wagon and pushed that little car until I was sick of hearing about it. It just so happens that all the tooling and technology used in the manufacturing process (e.g., space frame chassis, composit body panels) of the Fiero was now being used to make that little four seater car.... but the same technology. HELLO... It was more cost effective because they figured the Saturn would appeal to a larger market share (i.e., more profit). Vision??... Don't we have enough little 4-door, 4-bangers???   Still, Toyota managed to successfully market and sell the MR2 for years. Now, they bought it back even better and they are competeing with the = Boxer and the Corvette. You don't think that's what the Corvette division was afraid of in 1988, do you?   So, no, it won't surprise me. Vision? That medal now belongs to Chrisler.   Whew, Roy

I've been = so glad that I have all car/engine/trans numbers matching after 173k miles = and 33 years I was getting afraid the diff was not by some wierd circumstance.   Part of that work I was referring to was to open the diff and replace the lube. I do think it was done once before when I had a "noise" checked out =   years ago. It turned out to be an axle bearring cutting into the axle = shaft. Regardless I'm going to change it .   Thanks again,   Jim

Your fabrication abilities look quite good.   I was suprised to notice that the car seems to be sitting on cinder blocks. And in some of the photos, the blocks are on their sides, the weakest axis for an already weak support.   Do yourself a favor, and buy some good jackstands. This way you'll be more likely to live to finish the car and not be a tragic obit. in the local paper. We'd all rather see you finish this project and get that car on the road.   Please don't take this as a personal attack. But I've seen cars fall from precarious perches, and I'd hate to see anyone make a fatal or tragic mistake.
