(back) Subject: Re: Axle Codes and Ratios From: "Dan Lawrence" <danl@fdn.com> Date: Sat, 07 Apr 2001 09:44:21 -0400 I asked a question to the group a week or so ago about identifying the = rear end that I have. Then I discovered that I had a 12 bolt cover. It was = suggested that I may have a 12 bolt chevy rear end. The only way I could find out what I = have is to take the cover off and look for myself thus needing a new gasket. I checked the Ames catalog and saw that 70-72 models had a 12 bolt rear = end option. The pattern and shape of the cover looks the same, 6 bolts on top, = 6 bolts on the bottom. If I assume that the previous owner has changed the = rear end out with a second generation rear end, how can I identify the rear end as = a second generation? Where would the markings be for those rear ends? Many thanks to the group and to Geoff. I think we may take the time and = expense of running this group for granted. I certainly appreciate not only Geoff = for creating this group, but the great help from those that respond. This = group has saved me from a lot of headaches. Thanks a million. Dan 68/coupe/428

(back) Subject: New addition From: "Chris Porter" <fxstsb@qwest.net> Date: Sat, 07 Apr 2001 08:38:42 -0700 Hey all, been away for a week now. My wife went into labor in the middle of her baby shower last Saturday. She was in ICU until this past Wednesday. At 10:45 AM, she gave birth to our 1st child, Chase Edward. He will spend another 2 month's in the hospital, before we can take him home. He's now in ICU, but so far ( finger's and toes crossed ) he's holding his own. Mom is well, she came home last night. I'm starting to get REAL excited about being a dad, and someday sharing the Bird and the other Muscle Cars we have with him. Chris `68 350 H.O. Drop-top P.S. I got a few e-mail's off the list...................THANKS ( and thanks Brett )

(back) Subject: Re: Rant... From: "Pete D" <pjd805@yahoo.com> Date: Sat, 7 Apr 2001 11:30:36 -0700 (PDT) Roy, Just glad to see that someone had mentioned the Fiero! That was a fun-to-drive sporty car! What I had heard is that the next step in performance [or design] for the Fiero would've put it in direct competition with the Firebird/Camaro models. What was nice about the Fiero is that it was affordable to the younger market. I think Bob C. made a good point that the later FB's getting too expensive! I my opinion the later FB's had too much emphasis on luxury which added a great deal to the cost. Also the buying public had little choice when confguring the options - you're stuck with whatever package they sold. I tried to option a performance Formula FireBird and ended up at 28K! I had to include a 6-way power seat that I didn't want! If I wanted luxury I'd buy a GP! The US has always been behind [Europe & Japan] when it comes to small 2-door perfomance cars! And the Vette is only for the few that can afford its high price. Bottom line is GM goes where the $$ is and SUV's are the hot seller - unfortunately I don't think the Aztec will do it for them. They could've updated the Montana and kept the F/B or considered re-introducing the Fiero!! My .02 PeteJD [69 400/400] Subject: Re: Rant... From: "ROY D LUMSDEN" <rlumsden@tampabay.rr.com> Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2001 18:46:06 -0400 The axing of the Firebird and Camaro from big brother GM would really be no surprise to me. GM is a "bottom line" company and has lost what it means to have a "vision". They proved that to me when the decided to cut the Fiero. ........ (back) Subject: 200r4 install 1st gen Firebird From: "GTOken" <GTOken@ipa.net> Date: Sat, 07 Apr 2001 20:50:05 -0500 I finally set the 455/200r4 into my '68 Bird. I thought I would relay a couple of issues that came up that might be of use to others. According to all I had read, a TH400 crossmember would make this an easy installation. Almost. I had to drill 4 new holes in the subframe 1/2" rearward of the original holes to move the crossmember rearward so I could get the tranny mount bolts in. Also had to make a spacer about 1/4" thick at the rear tranny mount to lift it up the back of the trans a little because of interference between the crossmember and the trans pan. Here's trick I did that seemed to work out real good; I welded the 4 nuts to the top of the crossmember for mounting to subframe, worked great and made bolting it up 100 times easier. You should check for hole alignment first before welding and after drilling the new holes. So now I've got that all in and bolts tight, I look to see how hard its going to be to install the cooling lines. I just stared at it for a while wondering how the heck Im going to get anything up in there. I don't think its possible without pulling it all back out. So I think I'm going to cut a hole in the tunnel for access from inside the car, then make a patch plate with gasket to seal it back up. Wont be able to tell it under the carpet anyway. I sure don't want to pull the motor and trans back out. I'm going to need the 4-pin (actually only 3 pins) electical plug for the converter lockup, anybody got one? Also need a speedometer drive the slips in the back of the tranny and hold-down bracket or whatever holds it in, anybody got that? I need'em. Ken
