(back) Subject: "Before" photos From: "David Learner" <davidlearner@yahoo.com> Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2001 19:27:26 -0700 (PDT)   Just got back a roll of film and posted three pictures of the "car in a barn" I bought about a month ago. All I had done when these were taken was to wash off about five years of accumulated grime. As you can tell, about all the exterior needs is a good compounding and wax, which my son and his friends have begun. After these pictures were taken, I pulled it into the garage and disassembled the brakes and front suspension. Now that the control arms, steering knuckles and backing plates have been sandblasted and painted, it's time to reassemble with polyurethane control arm bushings and all new ball joints, tie rod ends, pitman arm, idler arm, brake linings, brake hardware, steel brake lines, rubber brake lines, master cylinder. Got all the parts on hand now, and have completed all press work, so its just a matter of a couple of evenings to pull it all back together. Then a trip to the local alignment shop and muffler shop and hopefully it will be good to go cruising (unless there are some drivetrain surprises in store). I know all this may be overkill, but I thought it would be good to be sure the car will steer and stop well, considering the 455 up front and my tendency to drive hard once in a while :).   Anyway, the link is:   http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=3D1637262&a=3D12526325   I hope to post some updated pictures later, but just wanted to share what I have so far. Buy a box of BB's. Nearly fill the holes with the BB's leaving 1/4 inch to the surface and fill with the remainder with JB weld. Sand to level. The car really hasn't sat for too long so I didn't jump =   for flushing the radiator just yet. Instead I took off the thermostat so = I could drive the car around and see if it would overheat again. I knew it wasn't just a faulty light since the engine comparment was getting quite = hot lately. Anyway I did this yesterday and while driving it I had another issue that I think could be related or at least affecting each other that = I would like to fix first. I recently tuned the car and set timing, dwell, idle etc... well I must have not done a great job because often the car would start to die if I wasn't giving it gas. (it got to the point where = I had to brake with my left and rev with my right foot while putting the = auto in nuetral. When I would give it gas it seemed to run REAL hard. Either way I approached it, it seemed to choke to death. I had a friend of mine tune it up by ear at his shop (figures it had no problems there) It seemed =   to be fine for a day or so then it sat a little. Well yesterday it has started again. I can't figure out why. Any ideas. Am I just really bad = at tuning? I thought the choke was stuck or something but it was fully open. =   What should I do next? Thanks for all the help. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

We also found the dark/black caulk from the RV plant (Dad worked for Fleetwood) to use on the floor board areas.     Someone asked about the caulk around the kick panels too. It is a grey clay like substance. It can be purchased at any electrical supply house and some Home Depots under the name Duxseal. It is sold in one and 5 lb clumps. 5 lb will do everything on a car that the factory did. This is very critical on the kick panels as rain will seep in if not properly sealed. For most of the other sealers visit an a/c supply house. they have various sealers in rope form to seal metal ductwork . Most can be shaped to any form or size. I keep various types in a 5 gal bucket as variety sometimes helps. Gary

Was it controlled by the radio or a separate switch (much like the power top switch on a convertible)?     Yes, the 69 Firebird had the power antenna option, and it usually was installed in the right rear fender with the motor in the trunk. The = up-down switch was on the dash inline vertically with the power top switch. The switch provided power to the motor that allowed it to run in the desired direction (a hot wire ran to the switch and two wires ran from the switch = to the antenna motor.) Ground was supplied through the frame.   You can have the power antenna mounted in the right front fender where the stationary antenna is located, but I've not seen one.   Hope this helps.   Steve Schuneman 1969 350 Windward Blue Convertible with white top.
