(back) Subject: Shows, swaps and cruises.. From: "Patrick W. Thompson" <patrickt@compucominc.com> Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 21:49:00 -0700 Hey all, Now that summer is fast approaching I am getting into the mood of going to the car shows. Would like to hear about some of the best shows, swaps and cruises that are aimed at the Firebird and Pontiac crowd. Would like to hear about all of them, no matter where they are held, but am especially interested in the ones that are held in central California. I know that = we have one coming up May 5th in Madera which is the 5th annual Pontiac-Buick-Olds Central California Classis. I have never been to it before but will be there this year and hope to see a lot of firebirds. Anyone else on the list going to this show? Thanks, Patrick 69 400 Convertible
(back) Subject: 2 Questions From: "Ryan Donohoe" <redonohoe@pikapp.net> Date: Sun, 15 Apr 2001 03:05:45 -0400 Question #1: After replacing the hood on my 69, I have a very difficult time opening = the hood. It releases from the first position but gets stuck in the second position. I adjusted the latch and everything just like the service = manual says to do, but it didn't do any good. Any ideas or solutions would be appreciated. Question #2: I have a on the column automatic transmission and would like to switch it with a floor mounted manual. Curious if anyone out there has done this = and if it is even possible. Ryan Donohoe 69 350 Coupe
(back) Subject: Re: More hood questions From: "Andy" <fbird68@ix.netcom.com> Date: Sun, 15 Apr 2001 01:31:49 -0700 I'm not sure why the double latch was added (the big three don't normally make safety changes unless forced to). In 1966 the General Services Administration (GSA) mandated 17 safety standards for vehicles purchased by the federal government. A total of 20 changes were mandated in 1967 for the 1968 model year by the Secretary of transportation. According to the Encyclopedia Americana Annual for 1967, the 1968 model year safety mandates dealt with or called for: A seatbelt for every passenger seat and front shoulder harness Padded instrument panel and visors Recessed or breakaway instrument panel controls and door and window handles Energy-absorbing steering columns Positive locking door latches Stronger seat anchorage Four-way flashers (flash front and back simultaneously) Laminated windshields Dual braking systems Standard bumper heights Standardized shift pattern for automatics Windshield washers, defrosters, defoggers and miniumum wipe area Glare reduction for instrument panel and wipers Emission controls Tire and rim changes (reduce bead separation, eliminate spinner hubcaps) Backup lights Outside rear-view mirror Ruptureproof and fireproof gas tanks Side cornering lights Truck lighting (no definition listed) Some of these were already in existence, and the new law either mandated, improved or standardized them. A requirement for head support was postponed for further study, and the tire and rim requirements may have been, too. Anyone know of any others for 1968? It is interesting to see that some items that are taken for granted now had to be mandated into existence. Three times more people died in car crashes cumulatively up to 1967 than in WWI, WWII, and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts (up to 1967) combined, so safety experts had lots of victims to learn from. I also noticed that recalls were big in 1967. Manufacturers conducted 91 recalls of a total of nearly 1.9 million cars during the 12 months ending 9/9/67. The following month GM recalled over 1.1 million '65 Chevy's to replace a steering part. The shareholders must have loved that! OK, more than you wanted to know...:-) Andy > Subject: Re: More hood question's > From: "x1r1 x" <x1r1@hotmail.com> > Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 21:12:44 -0700 > > I think we are seeing the difference between 67 and 68 hoodlatches here, > 68 having the 'new safety feature' > I don't know, maybe somone can confirm this. > Rowan >

Screws From: <Framair@aol.com> Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 11:11:26 EDT Does anyone have or know of a source for..... Screw (large philips head) (2) req'd per Fender Secures the Fender to the Reinforcement at Radiator Support. There was an individual on this List once who claimed to have a bag full of brand new, identical to the factory screws. I would like to purchase some that are not stripped out. Thanks ! John Put me on that list also. I need 8. These arent phillips head but actually called "truss head" another one thats similar and just as hard to find is the rear bumper to bracket truss head bolts above the license plate. I have contacted most major OEM suppliers in hopes of a large quantity purchase but no luck. One vendor that has speciality fasteners made has promised me for the last = 1.5 yrs to have some made. I did give him one that was in perfect shape for an = example. IF this was a Camaro item then Im sure it would be reproduced but as it is = its a Firebird only item. Oddly enough Ive seen some cars that I know werent molested with a mix of = cap head screws and truss head screws. Perhaps GM had a shortage also. Gary

They are a similar-looking (but very different >cut) called "Pozidriv" (registered trademark).... I posted the correction before I saw Glenns post. True they are pozidrive(trade name) but GM still calls them truss head. Look in your section 8.9 of parts manual Gary
