From: "x1r1 x" <x1r1@hotmail.com> Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 16:03:37 -0700 Test orocedure for power booster: 1:remove the check valve from the vacuum line to the booster, and blow through it. you should only have flow towards the motor. reverse or replace the valve if not working. 2:apply light-medium pressure to the pedal, I'd say 30 or 40 LBS Start the engine, rev it a bit if you have a big cam. The pedal should drop about 1/2 inch as the motor starts, if not the = booster is most likely failed. 3:With the engine idling, pull the hose off the brake booster, the car should start to stall, but if you are quick you can block the hose before = it does. No stall indicates a blown diaphram in the booster orthe carb has been adjusted to compensate for a massive vacuum leak in the booster. Blocking the hose to stop the vacuum leak should cause the engine to idle normaly. If no change with line plugged vs open,, check for a blocked = line. Your brake shoes may need adjustment. I adjust them, then work the pedal firmly a few times, then recheck my adjustment, sometimes repeating the process several times. And congratulations Rowan >From: hugoba@apcom.com >Chris, > >It's possible that one of the plungers in the master cylinder is jammed. = I >don't >think the booster would do this but to verify it you can remove the two >nuts >that hold the master cylinder on and pull it forward and then try the >pedal. (The names have been edited out to protect the guilty.) This is but a small sample from probably the most varied and eclectic bunch of music fans I've ever seen. Previous lists were recognizable to many more average listeners. The thread that displaced this one was about "the most embarrasing album/45/cd you ever purchased. Some were downright frightening, like a Firebird enthusiast who once was crazy about Vdubs or a Honda Dream 305. (back) Subject: RE: yet another failed attempt From: "danny" <dannyboylll@qwest.net> Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 18:30:36 -0600 thanks bret and dave i am going back in june to try it again. i am really close all i think i have to do is get the timing and carb down and i will be up and running. i was a little confused about setting up the timing... this is what i did... let me know if it sounded right. i pulled the #1 sparkplug and put a plastic ziptie in the cylander until = the piston was at top dead center. i then pulled the #1 side valvecover and = and looked to see what valve was opening as i turned the crank past top dead center. i figured that when i have the distributer pointing at the #1 plug wire on the distributer cap that this is when the spark is going to fire. after this the exhaust valve is going to open. once i got the distributer lined up i put it in and re-checked it. i never unhooked my fuel pump ( i did unplug the center distributer wire) so the engine was VERY FLOODED. = this is where i stopped. i am 99%sure my timing is right does it sound = right? talk to you guys later -danny 68 400 coupe

(back) Subject: More on Save the F-body From: "bird@mail.javanet.com" <bird@mail.javanet.com> Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2001 00:15:49 -0400 I believe my story is a microcosm of why the f-body is going the way of = the dodo bird. I love Firebirds. I love all four generations. I remember when the first = generations arrived at the Pontiac dealership in early 1967 (I was six). = I got my license when the 2nd generation T/As had the shaker hood, = screaming chicken, and that great evil-looking grille a la Smokey and the = Bandit. I couldn't afford to buy one since I was just a kid. But the = seeds were set. When things got more comfortable financially, I bought my first f-body, my = 67 convertible. I love it. But I can't use it as a daily driver (or I = should say I choose not to do so). A more modern f-body is more = appropriate, so I started looking for one to use as my summer driver. I could afford to buy a new 4th gen t/a. I choose not to. I just can't = justify buying a brand new Firebird or T/A when you can buy a nice used = one for so much less. They have terrible resale value and are a great = bargain used. Instead of buying a new Firebird or T/A, I bought a 1992 Firebird = convertible in excellent condition. I paid under $5000 By the time I get = done with some upgrades (my wife calls it "peeing on the hydrant") I'll = have $7000 into it. It's a great looking, riding and handling car that = scores high on the grin meter, especially with the top down. It does for = me exactly what I want. And, I kept over $25000 in my pocket as compared = to buying a brand new one! In five years, I'll do it again and buy a 4th = gen convertible. Look at the prices now - you can get early 4th gen = convertibles in nice condition in the low teens already. The market just = isn't there and the prices reflect it. If GM can't convince me, an absolute F-body enthusiast with enough income = to buy an F-Body brand new, where is their market? Gone, I'm sorry to = say. America wants SUVs. Just my observations. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Mail2Web - Check your email from the web at http://www.mail2web.com/ .

(back) Subject: Re: Safety mandated items From: "Andy" <fbird68@ix.netcom.com> Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 23:46:21 -0700 Rowan, If I'm not mistaken, you can turn a '68 console into a '67 console just by removing the burl overlays and replacing the door with a black one. As for why your car doesn't have shoulder belts, it could be that GM failed to meet the date, yours slipped by, your belts were later removed, or...? Have you checked to see whether there is a second set of buckles connected to the same mounting point as the lap belt buckle? These sometimes are lurking on the floor between the seat and the console. Anyone else have a '68 built in '68 that has no evidence of shoulder belts? What about all you folks with convertibles? Were '68 converts exempt?
