(back) Subject: Re: Broken Axel From: "Frank Zeller" <fzeller@tri-austin.com> Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 08:08:00 -0500 There is a place in California that see rebuilt axils. I will try and = find the number tonight. Buy two........ >>> cmellone@bellsouth.net 04/23/01 06:12AM >>> First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List .......................................................................... My left rear axle broke while cruising with my kids last night. It was the oddest thing. I was waiting for the light to change when I guess I accelerated a little too hard and there was a clank and a few bumps and then lots of revs but no movement. First thought was drive shaft but the tilt of the car told me otherwise. Thank God we only made it a few feet into the intersection and were not on the highway. Damage was also minimal. Only a minor dent to lower quarter panel and a broken emergency break cable. I seemed to have recovered all the brake parts which had been scattered over a 20 square foot section of the street. My first coarse of action will be to attempt to replace the axle. Can't tell if it's fused in to the housing yet but don't think it is. Can anyone tell me what axles are compatible on a 68 rear? I guess any of the first generation rears would work but what about second? I'm also seriously thinking it's time to swap out the 3.36 limited slip rear for a 3.08 POSI. The car is geared so low that it turns 3200 RPM at 60 MPH, making it hard to drive on the highway. Obviously gives great low end torque though! If anyone has a POSI rear for sale let me know. Thanks, Charlie ------

One m/c is for use with a booster the other is for use with-out the booster. I seem to recall that the one with the inset hole is the one with the booster, tho I may be wrong. Ok next time I'm bringing everything over to your place to drop in my 455! Congrats on the successful swap! Sounds like a winning combo! Good luck working out the bugs in the next few days! Mine so far has had no real problems... just have to fine tune it a bit, tighten my rocker bolts a bit and she should be good! Life with a 455 under the hood is a Real Nice thing! Are all of the mounts in the catalogues (Year One, Ames, etc. seem to list only list one for all transmissions) correct? Does anyone know where to get the rubber mount for the damper/weight that hangs underneath? Dan 68 Sprint Convertible (Slowly being put back together)

(back) Subject: Coolant levels From: "Lee" <pyre400@yahoo.com> Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 09:34:37 -0700 (PDT) Its a long story, but I will spare every one. The bottom line is that I need to know how low your coolant level stays in the radiator when it is cool. My level seems to stay about 1 inch below the filler. The reason why I ask, I had a problem which came about from a brand new STANT thermostat which did not open. It made my engine overheat and I did not know it because by the time the sending unit picked it up it may have been too late. In any case I ran into contaminated engine oil. I noticed that preasure was pushing coolant out of the radiator even when cold, so I suspected a head gasket failure. So off came the heads, they looked OK, so on with new gaskets. With my fingers crossed I ran the motor for 20 min with out a hitch. The coolant leve was about an inch down though. Inside the valve covers there was a little steam but no frothy emulsion. It seems that the problem was cured, but if not.... Is there any "typical" place where a Pontiac 400 motor will leak coolant. I have heard the Pontiac setup is supposed to be strong due to blind tapping (no water jackets in the way of the bolt holes) and more material on the block to keep things square when bolting the heads on. Any help would be appreciated, as this could be the end of my car. This would be the last straw let me tell ya! Thanks Lee __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! (back) Subject: electrical problem From: "matt schmid" <schmidmj@hotmail.com> Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 17:01:35 Ok, since I'm absolutely clueless when it comes to wiring, I'm going to = have to ask you guys a question. As you may or may not know this past week I = got my bird up and running. Well, the headlights didn't work and if I needed = to drive at night I couldn't. So I traced the wiring and found that there was = 4-5 wire connector unplugged in the floorboard near the highbeams. So I plugged that in and low and behold the lights worked. However some of the bulbs were out. Anyway, to my question...After I did that, the next day = The car wouldn't start. At first I thought it was the battery but it was good. = I finally got it started by messing with the ignition a little bit. It did that a couple of times more until I got it over to my parents house. Then = it wouldn't start at all. I pulled off the console with the speedometer etc, and checked the wires, they were all hooked up, nothing missing. Then I unplugged the ignition and checked the contacts for voltage and none of = them were getting any. I also checked each individual wire and none had any juice. It seems like somehow the lights are wired wrong and ?maybe? blew a = fuse or a fuseable link or something like that. Has anyone ever had a similar problem, and if so what did you do? Also if anyone knows where the = ignition fuse or link that might be replaced could you explain where in = the car it would be? Thanks a lot ahead of time. (back) Subject: Re: electrical problem From: "Michael Howell" <fishgod@iglou.com> Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 16:44:02 -0400 Matt- I did have a similar problem on my 63 Grand Prix. I disconnected the battery and used a multimeter (set to either resistance or conductivity test) and checked to see if any of the terminals on the fuse block had 0 resistance (or close) with a ground. I was able to figure out which circuit had the problem, then traced it to where the short was by selectively unhooking sections of that harness. It turned out some doofus = had taken out the license plate light and left a bare wire hanging there, it was shorting on the bumper. My problems were not as serious as yours since it did not effect ignition, but maybe that will help you trace it... = good luck! That 101 cc combustion chamber will be yielding you about 7 to 1 compression. That's good if you are running a blower, or are using some very cheap gas. Try hunting down a set of heads with 72 cc chambers. The 350s require smaller combustion chambers to get a certain compression ratio compared to 400s or even 455s. -BoB San Jose, CA 1968 convertible bob.cisneros@Sun.COM

Try a summit 2801 or an 068 at least. I doubt you will get 300 hp with this either. You can run the ram air 4 cam which is the summit 2802. You will need to set idle at 1200 and have high gearing. This might put you over 300. My 455 makes about 360 hp with comp xe268h which is 225/230 I think and .470. But it makes around 500 ft/lb torque tim
