(back) Subject: What is it? From: "Ensom" <censom@home.com> Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 23:23:40 -0700   I hope I can get some help in solving this little mystery. Here are the clues that I have at this point.   A have a buzzing sound that is being made by made by my 1969 Firebird Convertible (350 originally with 2 bbl.). Pretty much all original, a bit = of a plain jane (manual roof) 3speed auto on column.   What does the buzzing sound like? It sounds a bit like the following: a fog horn in the far distance, an electric fuel pump when the ignition is first turned on, a muffled seat = belt alarm or a muffled door alarm even an ignition alarm muffled or a electric pump operating or a power antennae. It definitely sounds electric with a vibration type sound to it and lasts about 5-7 seconds at a time.   When did it start? I have had the car for 3-4 years, and have only heard this buzzing in the last week. I first heard it after parking the car but now hear it all the time, even when it has been sitting for 48 hours. It happens when running (I believe I just heard it an hour ago when idling) but hard to tell over motor.   How frequent is it? It occurs quite regularly about every 2 to 7 minutes 24 hours a day.   Has anything been changed recently? No, the last thing I did was change seat upholstery a couple of months = ago. I did get a wheel alignment a couple of weeks ago, done by a reputable = shop.   Where does it come from? When I am in the drivers seat it seems to come from the power antennae in the trunk (mounted on top of 1/4 panel passenger rear, I believe the = correct position). When in the passenger seat it can seem to come from the transmission, or the passenger side front floor vent. When my wife was in the passenger seat she felt a vibation come through the seat in an area by her right knee. When I look under the car from passenger side it seems to come from right around the oil filter. When I lie under the filter = holding it for some kind of vibration it seems to come from the rear of the car. >From my head in the trunk it seems to come from the interior. I am not crazy (maybe old ears), cause I got my son (20 yr old ears) to try to = locate it as well and he can't, it moves on him as well. Even when we look = together (from different positions) we end up pointing to different sources (tried this a number of times).   Is it electrical? No, I have disconnected the battery and it continues.   I had thought it might be air leaking from the air shocks (in the rear) = but jacking up the front to put more weight on them doesn't seem to vary the noise at all.   I would be grateful to any of you sleuths out there that think they can solve what this sound is and where it is coming from.       Thanks White Bird censom@home.com

(back) Subject: Power Steering Adj From: "Gary Patrick" <Gary@tcworks.net> Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 06:13:53 -0400   Jeff its not the pump its the gearbox that makes the difference. Go buy a gear box from any Trans Am 69-78 and use that. Better yet is the WS-6 Trans Am box from 78-81(2.2 turns ) Pump is just fine. Check Achieves for notes on this.Gary       Subject: Power Steering Adj From: "Jeff Frey" <FREYJ@mascorp.com> Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 13:48:44 -0700   Is there a way to tone down the amount of pressure assist that the ps pump gives? I saw a power steering "tuner" (looks like a return valve of = sorts) in a street rod mag and wonder if it is worth the $75. Any body use one of these?   I have (a few years back) added power steering to my 68 6-cyl. It is from = a 66 Lemans, if I remember right. Lately, I am tired of the power steering being too good. itend to overstear too easily and it really takes away = from the solid feel of the car. If I run it w/o the power steering the front = end is rock solid, and feels excellent. It is just a bitch to park.   Thanks, Jeff
(back) Subject: Sprint 4 speed From: "Gary Patrick" <Gary@tcworks.net> Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 06:17:57 -0400   Jeff best one is a 4 speed from a v-6 Monza or Sunbird. Saginaws range from 256 first gear to a 350 first gear. Muncie and BW will also work. Saginaw was a Sprint 4 speed 3.11 for 66-7 and 2.85 for 68-9 Gary     Subject: Sprint 4 speed From: "Jeff Frey" <FREYJ@mascorp.com> Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 16:08:24 -0700   Will pretty much any vintage 4 speed (manual) work in a Sprint? Or does = the taller 1st and 2nd gearing make a significant difference? What was the model B/W?     Thanks, Jeff

(back) Subject: Re: Re: Broken Axel From: "Charlie Mellone" <cmellone@bellsouth.net> Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 07:23:41 -0400   Jim,   My axle broke because of a manufacturing defect in the the steel which = took 33 years to show up. It broke at the point where the cylindrical axle shaft is pressed into the drum stud mounting plate. It looks like the axle = is constructed by a heated pressing operation of these two parts. In my case, the pressing seemed to have initiated a small crack in the end of = the shaft at the point where it enters the mounting plate. The broken = shaft also looked like it was internally defective because about 1/2" diameter = center of the axle shaft core looked like it was rolled/cast too cold and = had a rough texture compared to the surrounding metal. Reminds me of a cold = solder connection.   Yes it was lucky I was going slow and there was minimal damage. I just = competed a 3.5 year body restoration and paint.   The good news is that my car is back on the road. I just pulled an axle = out of a 68 POSI rear that I acquired and it was ready to go. By the way, = this spare rear has 4.88 gears! Talk about fast off the line. I need to swap = these out for 3.36's. If anyone has 3.36's to sell or trade let me know.   Charlie     ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subject: Re: Broken Axle From: <Jimc2002@aol.com> Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2001 19:16:28 EDT   Charlie, You were fortunate to be at low speed with no accident involved.   I had a growl in my left rear axle years ago and when a Pont dealer opened = it up they found the left rear axle bearing had cut about 1/2 way through the axle shaft and it would soon break through. Since I've heard that that = was a potential Firebird problem. was that what caused yours? If so - we = should all beware.   Jim 68 400HO Conv

(back) Subject: Power Drivers Seat in 1969??? From: <E21pilot@aol.com> Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 12:19:53 EDT     I was surprised to find out that a power drivers seat was an option for = the 1969 Firebird. I've never seen one and wondered if anyone has? Was it a 4-way or 6-way power seat?   I'd also like to know if it's possible to retrofit the power seat = mechanism from another F-body of the same or different year into the seats of a 1969 Firebird. Has anyone attempted this?   Love those power options,   Rich W.       Rich,   My 1969 Firebird has the power seat. It goes front to back and up and = down. It is not original to the car, but I am almost 100% certain it is 1969. I can take pictures if you like. Apparently, the guy that restored mine had = a doner car that had AC and this power seat. He used the dash, (with the AC vents even though there is no AC), doors, and console. It is my understanding that the power seat option was like $350-$400 bucks. That would be like spending $1000 today.   Jason
