(back) Subject: 68 Rear Quarters From: "Keith Donmoyer" <kadonny@hotmail.com> Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 09:04:36 -0400 Joanne: You have hit on a subject that I have done much research on in the past 6 months. I also have a 68 in need of quarters. Here is the scoop. Currently there are no "full" reproduction quarter panels available (with sail panel) and NOS panels are not readily available. However, Classic Industries has purchased the tooling for the 68 full rear quarter, and as = of about 2 months ago they told me that they are very close to producing the full rears but there are still some bugs to work out. Second, of course = the quarter "skins" are available from many parts places, but the rumor is = that the rear "chevron" slots or gills are not long enough to fit in the chrome = chevrons and thus either the chevrons have to be ground down or the slots have to be altered. Third, there are also some full used quarters available, however my experience has been that they are very expensive to buy and even more expensive to ship! So, after all of that....I would call Classic to get an update on their repros, maybe they are ready to sell and ship, then if these are not = ready, then pursue the used ones. I myself have decided to put on the skins and keep the original wheel housings since they are in good shape. The skins leave the car the most original which is what I am looking for also. I = will deal with the chevron issue at that time. Hope this helps. Keith 68 H.O. (back) Subject: Re: Power Steering Adj From: "larry diede" <ldiede@bangkok.com> Date: Tue, 1 May 2001 07:33:18 -0600 Jeff, The amount of pressure put out by the pump can be adjusted higher by = pulling the relief valve out of the pump, diassembling it and adding = washers to increase spring resistance. I don't know if you will be able = to reduce the pressure of your pump. You will have to pull the relief = valve and see if you have washers in the relief valve that can be removed. = The relief valve is the large nut where the pressure hose comes out of = the back of the pump. It seals to the canister with an O ring. Removing = it will dump the fluid so be prepared to catch it with a container or a = lot of rags. Adding washers is a trick the "Rock Crawler" crowd uses to deal with low = RPM, locked front differentials, low tire pressure (4 to 6 PSI) and big = tires (36" to 40"). One of the problems it causes is, over stressing the = frame mounting points for the steering box and pulling the box off the = frame. Probably more onfo than you wanted....... (back) Subject: Re: 68 Rear Quarters From: <JGeigel@aol.com> Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 12:52:12 EDT I have gone the route of repro firebird skins, 80% Camaro skins (welded in = the Chevrons) and now used original GM quarter panels. What I've learned..... 1.) Decide on how perfect of a job you are looking for. The repro = firebird skins will actually take less time to trim and install than = buying used quarters. 2.) The used GM quarters fit a whole lot better than any skins (and = probably better than the reproduction quarters will). The problem is that = it takes a huge amount of work to trim the quarters of the metal they were = spot welded to. Then, if there are any imperfections (small dents, etc), = you still have to deal with that. It is no easy job. The final product = however can be excellent!! 3.) Using 80% Camaro skins and welding in the Chevrons is a pretty good = answer. They fit reasonably well and you get the correct sized Chevrons. = The final product still will not be a perfect match, but it is = reasonable. Unlike the Firebird repros, they include all of the metal = that wraps under the tail panel and the rear bottom edging that is = reasonably correct. There is no single right answer. Make your choice and go for it. Joe Geigel
