I live in Modesto CA and decided to drive to Lake Tahoe in my Miata that I bought a month ago. Stopped at the Pick and Pull in Stockton and = in the very last row of GM cars was a 71 Gran Prix. Snatched the gauges out = of it and I was back enroute to Tahoe. A perfect drive some of the lakes = along highway 88 were still partialy froxen over. Got to Tahoe by 3 pm. Won = $1000 on a poker machine in about thirty minutes. Left by 4 pm winnings in = pocket and had a great drive home. Firebird parts, free money and a great drive in one day. Is that perfect or what? Ames sells them. Search the archives for which wires need = switch or study the 69 wiring diagram. The radios work too, you just need = to switch out the push buttons. He was sooo impressed that anyone who drove a '68 Firebird could spell email, that he decided to donate free beer all around. Of course Bill donated Rainier to support the local economy. I'll bring a 12-pack if I ride, or a cooler if I drive the bird. As a former WWF member, I really like to have the club to hang with at the Bremerton Pontiac Drags. Leg drops off the tower and sleeper holds at the tree have given the event a true blockbuster appeal. - - Jeff >Chris, you are in the WWF??? (back) Subject: Carb linkage question From: "Patrick W. Thompson" <patrickt@compucominc.com> Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 17:03:33 -0700 I replaced the quadrajet with a edelbrock carb and have not yet figured = out how to configure both the throttle linkage so that I have full throttle = and the electric kickdown switch for the TH400. The quadrajet worked fine as far as throttle and had a curved flange that contacted the kickdown = switch. But after two rebuilds and a full professionally rebuilt replacement carb, correct numbers, I got tired of the poor idle. The edelbrock idles and = runs great. Anyone else on the list running an edelbrock carb with a TH400 = with electric kickdown? If so what did you do? Thanks, Patrick
(back) Subject: Stereo for 69 From: "Patrick W. Thompson" <patrickt@compucominc.com> Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 18:09:44 -0700 Has anyone got a line on a stereo, possibly one with CD changer controls, which will fit into the dash of a 69 without modifying the dash? I have found a couple of manufacturers that make it for 67-68 and 70-up but they skip the 69. I guess due to the uniqueness of the 69 dash. Thanks, Patrick
(back) Subject: Re: firebird /the perfect day From: "x1r1 x" <x1r1@hotmail.com> Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 20:54:07 -0700 That sounds like a perfect day alright! I've had a good last few days with my 'Bird too. Sprayed the subframe with POR15. It looks great, sprayed easy. I think = it sprayed easy, but I'm a paint newbie. I thinned it one capfull of POR thinner to eight or ten ounces POR, and it was just enough for frame and crossmember. I don't think Ill ever brush POR again. My friend lent me a = brand new Craftsman spraygun, because he didn't want POR in his HVLP = setup. It cleaned up easily (i cleaned immediately), and he needn't have worried. = The onlything I'd do differently is next time, Ill wear a long sleeve = shirt. the thinner smarts pretty bad, but I wasn't ready to spend the next week = or 2 half black. Today was filled by scotch brite and degrease inner fenders, firewall, radiator support, and underside of the hood. castrol superclean seems top = work pretty well, even diluted 3:1, and isn't near as nasty as gunk or solvent. I'm hoping to paint that stuff PPG glossy black tomorow morning, = then reassemble the front suspension while it dries. Feels great to be making visible progress. Remember that POR15 is nasty stuff and it's not recommended to spray because of the nasty chemicals it's made from. A simple spray mask is not enough. (back) Subject: Re: Engine Rebuild From: "Andy" <fbird68@ix.netcom.com> Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 22:45:04 -0700 Thanks for all the responses. I checked back with the rebuilder, and he confirmed that the static compression will have to come down (I misinterpreted the quote). The only difference of opinion, then, is the cam. The rest of the drivetrain consists of a TH400 and a 3.23 posi. He strongly believes that, since this is my daily driver, and I'll be doing lots of surface-street driving, driveability will suffer if I go to something more aggressive. The cam specs seem to bear this out, with the 268's operating range beginning at 1500RPM (the XE268 starts at 1600). Can the specs be believed? What will idle at 600RPM be like (compared to factory) with a 268? How does a 252 compare with the stock cam in a '68 YT block? (back) Subject: Re: Stereo for 69 From: "Roy Lumsden" <rlumsden@tampabay.rr.com> Date: Sat, 12 May 2001 08:40:46 -0700 Patrick, There are no in dash radios - aftermarket or converted stock - that will allow either cassette or CD. If you pull the radio out and notice the two slots in the dash, neither is large enough for a cassette or CD. If you = want to keep a stock looking dash, I recommend having your factory AM radio converted to AM/FM. Depending on the company you choose for the = conversion, not only will you get more power, but it will be updated to accept a CD changer (you can mount it in the trunk) and power antenna. Or, like most, you can cut a hole in your glove box and install a = completely seperate system. Roy -----Original Message----- From: Patrick W.
