(back) Subject: RE: New Old Car From: "Brady Esch" <besch@cardeon.com> Date: Mon, 14 May 2001 16:31:51 -0700   Glenn,   You may recall several posts of mine about six months ago about my own cracked top frame. I still have not addressed this problem (I drive it = only on sunny days, and there are lots here), but in scanning through the = Fisher body manual I found that it is very important to align the mechanism carefully. Specifically, one of the primary pivot points (both sides) is supposed to be loose when first raising a new top in order "to prevent damage". There is a detailed procedure for the alignment in the manual.   I have a theory that my top was worked on, maybe just by replacing the canvas, and that the mechanism alignment was affected. When the top was raised it caused that right rear side rail to bend and ultimately crack. = I plan on welding this part, probably reinforcing it as well to make up for = a change in temper. My autobody instructor had tried this in the past and says it will not work and it will re-bend in the same place. I suspect = that his experience was due to a top frame that was "repaired" but not aligned. The part I am guessing to be a real challenge will be to straighten the = bent part so that all pivot points are in-plane. I do not plan to get to this = in the near future.   Brady Esch 1968 400 Conv.

From: "Niklas Ridell" <vcc2.nridell@memo.volvo.se> Date: Mon, 14 May 2001 15:29:44 +0200     This subject must have been discussed in the past but I can't find it in the archives, so here we go again. I'm about to break in a rebuilt engine and I want your opinion about what oil quality to use.   Should I use a modern synthetic oil or the usual mineral oil? and what temp rating? ...10w40? ...straight 40?   Thank you. /Niklas     Niklas, thats kinda a personal preference thing but heres from the old = school.     No synthetics on breakin. Use 20 weight to breakin cycle up and down on speed lightly from 30 to 50 coasting and light acceleration. Do not do full throttle pulls.   Change oil and filter after cam breakin( first 30 -45 minutes at high idle =   no load) use engine oil supplement( crane or GM) change oil and filter after 500 easy miles change oil and filter after 1000 miles after 2000 miles change from petroleum to synthetic. Synthetic will not seat the rings properly. Gary From the old school

But I would have to ask WHY on the head swap? Gary

I did see a couple of red convertibles there. One was cruising by and the other one was parked. this was almost when we were getting ready to leave. We had just spent a few hours at the awards festivities so I was tired and ready to go.   I just uploaded some more pictures to http://www.apcom.com/fbody/ptour2001   Hopefully in the next few days I'll have time to thumbnail everything and put some captions in.   The trip was great!   BTW, I won a set of Hotchkis anti-sway bars which they will be shipping out to me (it wasn't the 66 cheby but it was better than nothing).   Hugo   --- Charles Hazelton <chuckhazelton@telocity.com> wrote: > First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List > ..........................................................................   > > P.S. Power on those is similar to a sprint, and they sound pretty good too. Rowan *normaly despises late Mopar*     Rowan, rare to one guy isnt the same to another. Glenn and I have been on a quest to own more useless junk than anyone else. Neither one of us has ever thrown away anything( car part) that may have the glimmer of hope as to a use someday. We have amassed at least 30 OHC-6s between us most of which are Sprints. So we dont look at it in the same way as others in performing a motor transplant. My dream is to get about 20 GTOs and yank the non matching numbers V-8s out and put in OHC-6s. Thats just a small payback for all the perfectly good Sprints that got hacked up for GTO parts cars. The reason she got me the LeMans? She says I'm hard to buy for, gift-wise, and that buying a wedding gift for your future spouse is a tradition. We're not even engaged, but she figured "why wait for little details?" I guess the couple of weddings we've recently been to have got her thinkin'.   On the GMC Motorhome subject, I would LOVE to see more collector car enthusiasts get into these amazing vehicles. They are truly the "Sports Car of Motorhomes". I drive brand new class A coaches almost every day, and none drive as well as an old GMC, even a ratty one.   I remember at the POCI in Springfield a red '68 Sprint Firebird convertible coming in on a trailer behing a 1976 GMC Palm Beach Motorhome. Turns out to be a guy who owns a Pontiac dealer in Michigan, and I've had his GMC in my boss's shop here in Orlando for repairs.   Glenn aka birdman     Clear wrote: > > First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List > = ......................................................................... > Glenn > Congrats on the new project and the "Cool Girlfriend".
