(back) Subject: Re: 1969 400-HO vs. RA III From: <Dfmcgr@cs.com> Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 23:03:15 EDT The Ram Air III was never officially called that by Pontiac. People refer = to the Ram Air III, but the official designation was L-74, 400 HO, = 335hp@5000. So I guess you could say they are identical.....the two names refer to the = same engine. The Ram Air IV was designated L-67 and developed 345hp@5300. (back) Subject: PHS Billing History Decode - HELP From: "Ian Highfield" <Ian.Highfield@actfs.co.uk> Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 10:21:21 +0100 Hi guys, I have a 1968 350 Coupe with a 2 speed auto here in England. The car is = in excellent order, and so I decided to send off for the PHS details quoting the VIN number. The responded very quickly by post to England, with a copy of the Billing History and a 'Master' copy of the Order Sheet. I had hoped I might have got the original sheet, telling me who the owner was, but never mind. I had hoped the lovely black paint (it is on the Show Pages - Black in England - only one) would have been the original color, but find it was in fact code TT - Primavera Beige - oh well, cannot be all original after = all, but still love driving the car (even on our narrow winding roads). I do however have difficulty in decoding one or two of the option boxes on the Billing History, and hope you might be able to help me with the following :- SHIP TO - Zone 38, Dealer 001 (who / where is this?) STATE CD - To 00 From 34 (where are these?) NORM PLT - P (what does this represent?) RTG - 9 (what does this represent?) And now for the queries on the Order Sheet (the one with numbers up to 70) :- 37 is C - there is no box 37 to decode from on the highlighted options = list ! I have 41(1) - Deluxe wheel trims (I still have these - immaculate), but I also have Rally II wheels (option 45(3) but not specified for my car) - assume aftermarket - nice though. I also now have dual exhausts (like new, not load), but again not = specified on the sheet 48(1) - assume aftermarket - nice though I also have two original AM radios, but a 1980's Kenwood Radio/Cassette is currently fitted - I will get around to refitting the original in due course, but still need to sort my antenna (rear mounted option). Specified 75(6) but the Option Sheet decode only goes up to 73 - what is 75(6) ? The order sheet they gave me is a 'Master' so I do not know who the = original owner was (registered 26/07/68) - any ideas on how I can trace the = previous owners ? And finally .... The tag on the bulkhead implies it was built in Canada - can this be ? = (the car was imported from Vancouver by the previous owner in London) I appreciate any help you guys can give me. Is it just the cam or are the heads, intake and exhaust manifolds = different as well? What about the carb? Thanks, Rich W. Rich, RAIII was a handle that enthusiasts first put on the 400HO for 69. Factory reference to it is the 400HO. Both had 48 heads but cam and carb differed from trans type. RAIII(400HO) had long branch manifolds. Gary

Zone 38/Dealer 1 was an East Coast Distribution Point for Europen = Exports >STATE CD - To 00 From 34 (where are these?) .... State Code for Delivery- 34 is Lordstown, OH (Final Assy Plant) "00" is found on most all Export Invoices. >NORM PLT - P (what does this represent?) .... Found on all Firebird (and I believe Pontiac) Invoices. Represents a Pontiac Production Plant. >RTG - 9 (what does this represent?) .... Special Handling for Export Vehicles. Found on most all Exports. Exact usage undefined; could have been a special fuel/antifreeze mix or special bulbs, kilometer speedo, mirror, tires, etc. >The order sheet they gave me is a 'Master' so I do not know who the = original >owner was...any ideas on how I can trace the previous owners ? .... The Billing History only identified the Dealer where the vehicle was = shipped to and/or charged to. The first actual owner would only be on = file with the first selling dealer. Those records would be at the dealership; = not PMD. I doubt that PMD saved owner-warranty info (though, they might have = and just decided not to make this info available for legal reasons). The only chance of tracing ownership is a title search and that is not difficult since most states have limits on how far they go back. = Especially tough for an export. Other possibilities might include Insurance Records (if you have = connections). >The tag on the bulkhead implies it was built in Canada - can this be ? = (the >car was imported from Vancouver by the previous owner in London). ....No, this cannot be since the '68 Firebird was only built at (2) USA = Plants: Lordstown, OH (LOR) -and- Van Nuys, CA (LOS) One would think that for $35 they could expect more complete decoding of = the Billing History instead of simple generic copies of readily available information. yes, the Invoice itself is well-worth $35 but that 'handling/profit fee' should cover decoding ALL sales codes and every block on the BH including Zone/Dealer Codes. Unfortunately, the Files are 'controlled' by a private individual who has decided to sell the Zone/Dealer decoding separately as a repro Window = Sticker for another $25.
