(back) Subject: Re: 1969 400-HO vs. RA III (plus RA III vs RA I, II and IV) From: "Joseph Cione" <cione@aoml.noaa.gov> Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 12:24:22 -0700 Q: Whats the difference between a 1968-9 400HO car vs an identically equipped 1969 400 RA III car? A: Functional (cold air) ram air induction came on the 69 RA III. 68-9 400HO cars did not have this. Otherwise they are 100% identical cars (ie ra III did NOT have upgraded carb settings, cam, heads, exhaust manifolds etc) As I recently mentioned, if you wanted all the hardware and performance upgrades that the "Ram Air Performance Package" truely offered (i.e. cold air induction PLUS better flowing heads/stiffer valve springs, 3.90/4.33 rear, radical cam, stronger valvetrain, etc) you HAD to get the RA IV (not the RA III/400HO ) in 1969. In 1968, the RA I or RA II (and not the 400HO) had to be ordered. Think of it this way.... RA III Firebirds (and Trans Ams for that matter) came with *Ram Air Induction* while RA I, RA II and RA IV 'Birds and TAs came with a *Complete Ram Air Performance Package* =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Subject: 1969 400-HO vs. RA III From: <E21pilot@aol.com> Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 19:14:02 EDT For the 1969 model year, what is the difference between the 400 HO and the RA III? Is it just the cam or are the heads, intake and exhaust manifolds different as well? What about the carb? Thanks, Rich W.

From: <Metthem@aol.com> Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 14:19:39 EDT My friend suggested this cam for what I want which is a streetable cam, = nice lobe, fast on takeoff mainly to about 60 mph(although I wouldn't mind it being good to 100 : )>); basically stop sign to stop sign racing; rat = racing. I thought I would get your opinions first, I don't understand cams so I = will give you what he wrote down for me. Oh yeah, 69 350 2 bbl with 4 bbl = going on, all internals are stock. Lobe separation: 112 valve lift; .420 intake and exhaust duration: 256, intake and exhaust camlift: .280, intake and exhaust duration at .050 degree camlift: 204, intake and exhaust. Would this be any nicer that the 2bbl cam that I have in there now? I = want this to be a good daily driver too, any suggestions? Thanx, Gary

Can someone tell me the correct color of the muffler and tubing on the A/C compressor? 2. I also need to know the correct routing for the heater hoses for a '68 A/C Firebird. I have found so many modifications that I am sure that the way it was when I got the car is not correct. As always, thanks for such a helpful group. Ed 68 400 conv.

I have also been told late model mopar products have problem with Dextron = 3 and should only use mopar type fluid available at your mopar dealer. This information was from My local GM & Dodge dealer. Todd What's the deal with dexron 3 auto trans fluid? The Manual I have says dexron 1 for pre 1975, and dexron 2 for 1975+. I go to the store, and all I see = is dexron 3 trans fluid. Is this what I need? Steve Brady 68 400 Convertible

They (and you all) know we'll have to buy the gas sometime... So boycotting a specific day is, in = a word, "worthless" as a statement... The strategy that I think will work has been wandering the web for awhile. As a group, boycott a specific company. Don't buy gas from Mobile and = Exxon *ever*, for whatever price... Do this until they squeal, then do it some more... That will hurt them right where is counts, in their pocket book. This strategy works better because you/we have changed where we buy gas... Not just postponed that purchase 24 hours... Rich

Actually, there is. First of all, you can either build the refineries, drill the wells, and build the power plants necessary for cheap energy, or you can pay more for energy and feel better about the environment while = you sit in the dark and your Firebird sits in your garage. Before you go off on oil companies for the price of gas, you should know that the tax on a gallon of gas is more than their profit. You might also consider all the chatterers who think Americans should pay = as much for gas as Europeans. (And the difference is mostly due to taxes. As much as our fuel taxes are, Europe's are much more.) There seems to be no shortage of editorial writers who are pretty happy that we are paying more for gas. Craig

(back) Subject: Re: Stereo for 69 From: <Jimc2002@aol.com> Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 02:26:45 EDT Patrick Brett A Christmas present from my wife, I installed one of the "Secret Audio's" from Paddock in my '68 this winter and so far I'm very happy with it. I wanted to keep the original AM in place for the original look. I was able = to install it without so much as drilling a single hole in the car. First, I = replaced the old single dash speaker with the dual speaker available from Custom Audio via Year One. The speakers sound OK but of course they don't = offer much stereo separation. (Again, I wanted no new holes) Then I bought = industrial strength Velcro and attached the box up under the dash above = the glove box. The box is small and light and there was plenty of open space there for it. Routing and plugging the wires into the fuse box was easy. = The existing AM antenna worked fine and I guess if it's extended to 31" it = should be best for the FM. Finally I put the remote display/control into = the console -- a routing through an existing console mounting screw hole saved = cutting a hole. (The console is held at sufficient other points that one missing didn't affect it.) As Brett mentioned, a CD changer (maybe in the = trunk) can be added and controlled with the display/control also. I may "mention" it to my wife for next Christmas. Jim 68 400 HO Conv
