(back) Subject: 4 bolt mains?? From: "Geoff Swavley" <geoffs@radx.net> Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 16:48:35 +1000     Hi all,   Can you tell if a 67-69 400 block is 4 bolt mains from any external detail? I have a friend that has a 366 hp '68 400 block for sale (code XT from memory) and he thinks it's a 4 bolt block. I know that the hp rating is no indication as the 335hp RA1 XN coded block was 4 bolt. Apart from pulling the sump off ... I dunno??? Is there a list of which codes were 4 bolt?   thanks   geoffs :-)
(back) Subject: Trunk details continued .... From: "Geoff Swavley" <geoffs@radx.net> Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 17:00:59 +1000     I saw some good questions from Daniel Dominick, and timely! I am about to start on my trunk. Did anyone reply to Daniel's questions? There are some tricky parts to this that I am only now discovering. There are two main parts to the trunk: 1) Spatter Paint 2) Trunk Mat.   I have been pestering one of the large suppliers here in Australia that has a lot to do with many US suppliers. After sifting through the catalogues we have noticed some anomolies.   Spatter Paint =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D   This appears to come in various colors depending on the supplier! the two most common seem to be: black / aqua grey / white   How do you know which color came with the car? My car is Alpine Blue (and I promise to show the photos soon - thanks to all of those that replied to my previous posts) - I presume black / aqua??   Trunk Mat =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D   This gets even better! If you go to Classic Industries you get: grey / white black / aqua   and apparently the gray white is really closer to grey / black ???? Go figure (this was from someone that ordered one???)   If you go to Paddock you get: green / white black / gray dark green / aqua charcoal / gray   (as a side note there are spatter paints to match also)   Once again ..... how do you know what trunk mat came with your car? Does an Alpine Blue car (code DD on the cowl tag) have black / gray for example???   thanks all for any light you might shed on this topic.   geoffs :-)
(back) Subject: RE Jeffs 400 hood From: "Gary Patrick" <Gary@tcworks.net> Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 06:01:29 -0400   From: "Jeff Lane" <JeffLane32@hotmail.com> Just had my new 400 hood painted. Wow! Only thing is even with the = computer color matching it's a little lighter than the rest of the car - but shouldn't be too noticable.   Jeff, A good color match is important but proper application is KEY. On metallics air pressure and spraying techniques make the colors lighter or darker. This is part art and part science, and finding a good painter that can blend is hard. Gary
(back) Subject: RE1968 PONTIAC FIREBIRD SPRINT From: "Gary Patrick" <Gary@tcworks.net> Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 06:09:34 -0400   From: "Brett Luikkonen" <brett@cisdirect.com>   Just happened to see this ad on trader on line for a 68 sprint six: 1968 PONTIAC FIREBIRD SPRINT 6-cylinder, 4 barrel carb.4 speed, power windows, power brakes, fold down rear seat am radio, all original GREEN on green.no title stored for 2 years.moving must sell, $2000 561-222-3520 or561-586-1452. in NC.     Thanks Brett, WISH I WAS COLORBLIND. (back) Subject: [a] autumn gold and [b] 1st gen stereos From: "bird@mail.javanet.com" <bird@mail.javanet.com> Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 06:31:44 -0400   Regarding Autumn Gold paint, I don't have a chip for you BUT it is a great = original muscle car color. Put on with modern techniques to give it some = depth it would look great on your 'bird. The thing about keeping the = original paint color on your car is originality never goes out of fashion. = And Autumn Gold isn't a color you're going to see on every other firebird = at any shows you attend.   Regarding stereos and spending lots of money to convert your factory am = radio, there is a low-price option. I use a plain old Audiovox Am-Fm = converter that I bought at a swap meet for $5. You can find them very = easily, they're like rocks. You wire it in directly without changing any = harnesses or any original wiring. Best of all, the converter fits into the = ash tray so you don't have to drill or mount it anywhere. I wrapped mine = in foam so it won't rattle. It stays out of sight but plays FM stations = through your AM radio and AM speaker(s). Arguably it's even "correct" for = the time period because lots of cars had these back in the late 60s and = through the 70s. I love it.   The sound fidelity is no better than the crappy in-dash speaker that came = with the AM radio. For me that's fine because I am more interested in = authenticity, with the top down I'd rather hear the engine and exhaust = rumble anyway. If preserving originality, saving money and having a true = late 60s experience is of interest to you this is a good way to go.   -------------------------------------------------------------------- Mail2Web - Check your email from the web at http://www.mail2web.com/ .

(back) Subject: Re: Sub frame connectors From: "Niklas Ridell" <vcc2.nridell@memo.volvo.se> Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 13:51:26 +0200       At the risk of tiring you I would like to once again recommend this home = page: www.detroitspeed.com No I don't gain anything whatsoever in recommending this company, but I really like their home page. They show pictures step by step of many chassi modifications. One of them is the installation of their own weld in sub frame connectors.   Look under Projects/Elmer Millikan.   /Niklas             brett@cisdirect.com wrote:   > > Anyone have any suggestions on sub frame connectors? (back) Subject: Re: RE Jeffs 400 hood From: "Jeff Lane" <JeffLane32@hotmail.com> Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 08:36:27 -0400   You got that right on the application. Plus they use different paints nowadays I think? How'd you know it was metallic? I told the body shop I wanted any leftover paint and they gave me about a pint of the stuff they used on the hood. Nice. Took out a small paint brush yesterday and filled = in some "chips" on the door edge and it matches pretty good. Anyone know the proper way to buff those out? I learned my lesson. Never put your fender back on late in the day and eyeball the alignment and then come out the = next day in a daze and open the door to grab a part from the inside of the car!!!! Can you say CRUNCH. My heart sank when that happened, but luckily = it didn't bend or dent anything - just took some nice big chips off the door edge. I'll try and shoot some pictures with the new hood some day when I = get the car back together. Hopefully this summer some time by the way it's going...     ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gary Patrick" <Gary@tcworks.net> To: <firebird-L@oakmediacreations.com> Sent: Friday, May 18, 2001 6:01 AM Subject: RE Jeffs 400 hood     > First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List > = ......................................................................... > From: "Jeff Lane" <JeffLane32@hotmail.com> > Just had my new 400 hood painted.
