I'm going to need to take out the windshield in my 68 convertible in order to address some rust at the leading edge of the dash. A bit concerned about the company breaking the glass, as it is original. Anybody know of a good source for replacement, if it does break? I want to be 100% sure of availability before giving him the go ahead, otherwise I will live with the rust or deal with it some other way. Thanks.
Thanks Mrrman and Harold. Checked out both websites and they only show tinted windshields. My original is clear, which is what I would like to stay with. I'll contact them directly and see what they have to say. Thanks again.
OK, revisiting my original post, They did crack the windshield, so I will be ordering a replacement. Thanks Mrrman and Harold for your recommendations. Now the next question, is it worthwhile to have it date coded? This will be a good restoration, but I'm not really into winning trophies. Is it that visible in the first place? Oh yeah, the rusted dash panel was replaced and now looks great.
You would have to have a 99 point show car for the date code to matter. You have to look hard to even see it.
But it's your money.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. I would recommend the tinted for the windshield. It was available as a option by it self. It will help a lot with the sun. Mine was not ordered with a tinted windshield but I went with it for the replacement.
My w/s was cracked when I bought the car 14 yrs ago...I went to "discount Auto Glass" here in Houston $145 installed....nobody ever looked at the date etc....but I had clear vision
Is the car numbers matching or otherwise worthy of the price of the windshield plus shipping?
If the replacement glass locally will cost you X amount...and having date coded glass shipped to you costs a little more, and the car is worthy of purchasing said glass, go for it.
Have you checked the other glass to see if they are all correct to the car? If so, buy the date coded glass.
In essence, if you can justify the expense based on the cars current or future condition, buy the date coded glass.
