What is the correct heater hose routing and length for the heater hose that goes from the water pump housing to the heater core? I've seen pictures of the hose going from the housing into the retaining bracket on the front of the head and then to the heater core. The other pictures I've seen go from the housing through a retaining bracket on the inner fender then to the heater core with no retaining bracket on the front of the head. Is the bracket on the front of the head always used? Could it possibly use the bracket on the front of the head and the retaining bracket on the inner fender together? Service manual shows either or.
It is a 68 and from what I just read the bracket on the front of the head is used on the non A.I.R. cars and the inner fender hose bracket is used with the A.I.R. system.?
No. The bracket on the front of the head was not used on 68. I went through this on my restoration. A lot of bad information out there.. I purchased one thinking I needed it to but it was not used.

A.I.R was '67 only for Firebirds built for California.

I agree!

Don't forget the special foam spacer that goes between the hoses and the chrome valve cover.
I was fortunate enough to find a couple more of those for two of my 'birds.
It's in the lower, left hand corner of this picture:

Gus, I don't think the battery ground should go through that hose guide.
Where did you get that picture from?
And that air cleaner looks identical to mine, both without the xtra GM sticker that Harold has on his car. Still unsure about the use of the GM sticker on 400 cars. I've only seen them on 350 cars.

Where is your neg battery cable attached (if any) to the car? One end to battery, other end to bolt on head with no straps in between? I cannot any straps in the Pontiac illustrations so it looks like it just sits on the wheel well.

Good question. Mine is unlike others I've seen and may not be a good reference. The AC may be the reason.
First, I have no clamp to dress the heater hose through. I bought one once thinking mine was missing but could not use it. At the point of the hole for the clamp there is not enough room between wheel well and the AC to put the hearer hose let alone a big clamp and the hose.
Second, I do have a small strap at the back of the wheel well that the negative cable gets dressed through where it turns toward the head. I suppose I replaced that strap years several ago when I put on new cables but don't recall. I looked at some pictures I took of some very nice 1st gens and don't see that strap.
That's what I was referring to in the second paragraph. Mine has a small strap holding it but I don't see it on other very nice '68s. I can take a picture if you want but wouldn't say mine is representative of what was correct.
