I discovered a tap for an electrical plug on the driver's side by the shifter cable that looks like something is suppose to plug in there. Any idea what this tab is used for?

Correction, - it's on the driver's side towards the rear of the trans, close to where the shifter/linkage cable is connected, little above the transmission pan. Looks like it has a round treated base and a male tab connector. Still think it would be kick down?
Yes, kick down on driver's side. Hence my question mark on my first response.

Right on, - Thanks much! I do have the kickdown switch in place on the carb, just need to trace wires and plug back into transmission male connecter...
This raises a few more questions though. Does every Firebird 400 w/ the 400 turbo trans have that switch? When I look at the wire schematics, it would appear that the carb kickdown switch connects to the windshield wiper motor. Do you have any specifics on how this kickdown switch mounted by the carb relates to the plug in question on the trans?
The plungers themselves are impossible to find and not reproduced. A couple of aftermarket companies (like Lokar) make acceptable substitutes if originality is not a problem.

Thanks for the pix, ....I wanted to find out how the electric kickdown works in relationship to the male connecter (tab) on the transmission. My original question raised the starting of this thread as I found that tab on the tranny and nothing was plugged into it. One member suggested that tab was for the electric kickdown switch, and I'm still trying to not only verify, but make sense on what plugs in there and how does it work with the switch at the carb as the wiring seems to go to the wiper motor....
Sorry, did not read that as carefully as I should of.
There is supposed to be a long black wire with a female terminal on the end that comes out of the factory engine bay harness at one end of where the harness crosses through the plastic tray over the tranny hump. I can't remember if it branches out at the driver's or passenger side of that plastic gutter.

Rejoice you are looking at the '68 wiring diagram. They don't even show the tranny kickdown for '67.
I went to check both diagrams and I see what you are saying. Yes, the "hot" lead for the kickdown plunger at the carb looks to be a continuation of the hot lead for the wiper motor.
That black wire to the tranny should be the continuation of the plain black wire coming off the back of the carb plunger.

Still trying to figure this one out. Both of my 68s have the same kickdown switch although 1 car is a 2bbl/350/2 speed powerglide and the other one is a 4bbl 400/TH 400 trans. The question is regarding the 400 car.
We've already established the 2 wires that come out from the back of the downshift switch has a solid black and a black/yellow wire. The black/yellow wire is the hot wire and gets it's power from the windshield washer motor. Where does the solid black wire go??
Ultimately I'm looking for the wire/wires that connect to the TH400 trans solenoid located on the driver's side on trans. The solid black wire in the back of the downshift switch appears to be going into the bulkhead or somewhere down there but not to trans? Any other thoughts what goes to the trans itself and HOW it is routed? Or was there 2 wires going to the trans mounted solenoid?
I thought both wires went directly down to the drivers side of the transmission. Or at least one of them plugs in down there.

Yeah, me too! There might even be 2 wires that go to the connector that plugs in at the trans. Trying to find out for sure. Schematics show the black wire goes to trans, but it does not specify if this is for the powerglide or TH400....
Was just on the GTO site, and found out they use a black and orange wire that goes to the 400TH solenoid...I have a black/orange wire disconnected with a female connecter pinched into the firewall. What do you guys think? Is the Bird wired same as the GTO and used this wire for the trans kickdown?
Can't say for sure on the 68, but on the 69 the power comes from the windshield wiper or horn relay on the firewall, goes to the switch on the carb and then one wire goes to the solenoid on the (TH400) transmission. (It's basically just an on/off switch on the carb.)

So does the black wire from the back if the kickdown switch by carb route directly to the TH400 transmission solenoid? That's the only thing I still need to conform. And does is run in a conduit or just the wire itself?

On my '68, the black wire runs from the switch to the tranny directly. No conduit.
