I have a possible 68 project that I´m interested in but before I buy it I need to find some additional info. The bird was shipped here some years ago. From which state, unknown. No title, just a "bill of sale" on a napkin.
In order to get it registered here the Finnish customs needs some verification that it was registered and used in traffic in the US at some point.
The VIN and trim tag info itself seem to decode true but for example VinAudit.com can´t find anything. I need some sort of document to verify the car. State, former lisence plate, some official record.
Here in Sweden, an imported car must have the registration documents (for a car that has been imported from the USA it is called the Title) in original to be able to get a Swedish registration. They don't accept a copy. Otherwise the car is impossible to register. I don't know if the finnish rules are the same, though.
Sorry, this is not much help to you, but be careful before buying a car without the proper documentation.
You need to find someone who can do a countrywide title search.

Due to current privacy laws, it's likely you will not find anything. Unless you get lucky and find a previous owner.
Posting an ad on craigslist may help 1%.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. By federal law, they cannot give the name of the original owner. It does, however, list the dealership from which the car sold, clearly documenting the fact that the vehicle went into service on US highways. Send them an email, and explain the problem.
Amervo has a good idea there. It may be that an affidavit could be prepared by PHS, or if the dealership is still around, by them. Absent something suitable for your government, it may be a parts car. Cal
If this only had a notarized bill of sale we would be ok. But it doesn´t, just a "bill of sale".
On another forum I got the PHS link also, will have to think about it if all else fails. Just not sure if it´s enough for Finnish customs, they tend to be very unfriendly and against bringing old crap like this on the roads here... if and when there´s room for doubt, they doubt.
