Trying to find out if my door mirror is original. I have the rectangular unit. What I found out so far is that the rectangular mirror is the 2nd design used on later built 68s. The part number is 3914753 and the casting number is HA 61071. There is also a date code in the mirror lens if the glass is original. Questions: The 68 and 69 mirrors in the Ames catalog show 2 different part numbers. What is the difference? Maybe the 69's were simetrical? A lot of repops were casted using the same casting number (HA61071). How can I be certain I have the OEM mirror? Mine has this casting number.
My Jan. 30, 1968 car has its original rectangular mirror. On the car, I find only one number; on the top of the mirror surface is an etched "2-DMI-7" (whatever that is).
Thanks Jim, - the number on the glass indicates your mirror was made 2 (Feb) of 67. Is yours simetrical (centered on the stem) or is it off to one side ?
Odd a 2/67 mirror would go on a 1/68 car. Wonder if the 2 on mine was really an abbreviated or error 12, especially since the mirrors were round until then. The stem is off-center.
Yeah, was wondering about that too, but parts were built ahead of time so it is a possibility that yours are correct. If you're up for it take a look under the steam (you'll have to take the mirrors off) and let me know what the casting numbers are. There should be 2 or 3 different sets of number in the cavity
Im still the rookie here but < ive been learning for a yr and a half now, from you guys.
I mostly focus on 69's and don't know if it this info will transfer to 68 or not.
the rectangular mirror on the 69 is part #9782390 (to the best of my knowledge) there is another mirror, the part # starts with a 3xxxxxx. I was told by a pontiac guy that the 9782390 is for firebirds and the 3xxxxxx unit is put on chevy's. the bases are slightly different, I have a pontiac mirror in the basement to look at. the difference in the base is, the pontiac base comes to a point and the chevy mirror has a flat end, other wise they are dentical. I hope this helps some, if I'm right about the mirrors.
I have a NOS mirror put away in its original box, I have not looked at it since this info (if correct) has popped up we've had that mirror for over 30 yrs, and we're wondering if its a pontiac or chevy mirror

Good info, did not know about the pointed end. The info I gathered in my research suggesting that the 69 Mirrors are semetrical where as the 68's are centered on the stem left to right. The part number you show is correct but it is not stamped on the mirror. There are merely casting numbers on the bottom and year numbers on the glass., problem is most re-pops, the better ones, have that casting number also, AND they offer the year correct mirror glass. SO might be a loosing battle to find out what's original and what's not.
Well I can't help you with your quest to determine if your mirror is original, but I do have a couple of mirrors I took off my 68 and have the numbers off them. One has the mirror centered on the base and the other offset. I just assumed the one on the right was offset as it had to be angled toward the door more than the drivers. I am not the original owner so don't know if they are even from a Pontiac. Centered mirror has base numbers 9826594 and cbc 2. The glass number is 9-DMI-4. Offset mirror has base numbers CBC-3874242 and F-2 the glass number is 9-DMI-8. The offset mirror's base tapers off more at the front than the centered mirror's base.
I'm assuming the centered mirror with the glass etched 9-DMI-4 is from a 1974 car . The DMI is the manufacturer's initials, Donnelly Mirror Inc. If it was made by Ajax mirror it would have the code 9-AX-4. Apparently both supplied mirrors to GM
I was wondering about the code as well and what the"4" was standing for. I think if it was for 1964 that would be incorrect as in the early sixties I believe mirrors were round and the stem/base was different and shorter- if it stands for 1974...I thought those years had a totally different style mirror? Also, I've been seeing just the numbers on the glass door mirrors and some I've seen have the "@" in the numbers as well. not sure what the difference is.
I removed the glove box 2 days ago to get the heater box out for heater core repair. In the glove box was the original mirror gasket in good shape . I'll post a pic, pointed end and all

Wow, checked the NOS mirror we had stashed away, Ye Haa! it has the pointed ends. we bought that mirror off an old couple in Englishtown NJ back in the 80"s. Someone wrote on the box "camaro late" in marker . ofcourse we were always told camaro and firebird were the same. Guess we lucked out here. In the orginal GM box was a gasket but it has flat ends and is of no use on this mirror, luckily I found the original in the glove box.
