Hi new to the forum, and Im helping my friend restore his 68 firebird. He just put on new tires and wheels right after new paint and we noticed the front tires rub when the wheels are turned. He has 17x7 American Racing Torque Thrust 2 with 4" bs. and the tires are 225/50 any suggestion where to start? Do you think the sub-frame may be too far back (I mean its close, a half inch would put us in good shape)
Well if you were restoring the car it wouldn't have 17" wheels. Not that i'm a purist, go with what you like. A 225/50R17 may have a 27" diameter tire and a 195/75R14 only a 25-1/2" tire. Could be the tire/wheel size. I have 15" on mine and have been fighting tire rub since I bought it.. Could be the size of the tire or a worn out suspension, or may have been pranged in a crash or...
Every combination is a bit different. I have a '68 Firebird with lowered stock suspension. I'm running American Racing Torq Thrust M 17" x 7" wheels with 4" back spacing on the front. Front tires are BF Goodrich g-Force 225/45R17's. My car is also equipped with Wilwood disc brakes which move the wheel mounting hub out 3/8". I have no issues with rubbing. I experienced a little different problem but the solution may help you. I'm running a kicked out oil pan. The inner tie rod on the passenger side barely touched the corner of the pan at full lock. I didn't want to take any chances so I added a stop bolt to the lower control arm steering stop. I simply drilled and tapped a 3/8-24 hole in the stop for a stop bolt. Works great. Limits the travel slightly but one would never know it driving the car.

not my car, like I said Im helping my buddy with his car
ive changed tires a few times trying to fix a rub issue... I just assumed it was the tire... something is rubbing on the passenger side but I'm pretty sure its not my tire... I stopped the car when the rubbing noise was happening and the tires were an inch clear... I have the car up on my lift now trying to track it down...
