Nice article but it doesn't mention the 68 400 HO. My understanding is that the 400 HO was a Ram Air motor and goodies but without the open scoops and pan. I almost bought a garage find all original 68 400 HO (still kicking myself). It had the long branch manifolds. I don't think there was a 400 HO in 67. The HO in 67 was the hopped up 326.
For 1968, the same basic 400 remained, now rated at 330hp at 4,800 RPM and 430-lbs.ft. of torque at 3,300 RPM, and equipped with "16" cylinder heads; "62" heads were used on some automatic cars. Pontiac also added the L74 400 H.O. engine, using the "067" cam on automatics and the 288/302-duration "068" on manuals, both rated at 335hp. Ram air had a different engine block casting and got a 4 bolt main. Not sure if that was both Ram Air 1 or 2 or both.
Same exhaust manifolds, different cams. Different Carb and dist numbers. Rated the same HP but just on paper.
I appreciate the help guys. So I can assume the 400HO and Ram AIR I are indeed different motors? And the Ram Air I has the air induction "standard" on the Firebird. Sorry if I sound a bit confused.
