I'm trying to wrap up some projects before spring... this one has been bugging me.. the oil pan sits right on the cross member..... there is no clearance... I replaced the motor mounts when I did the motor... just the mount that bolts to the motor... there was existing parts of the mount on the crossmember that I didn't replace... heres the questions..
could those mounts be bent? worn? can I run a shim between them? are there thicker mounts? I just bought the standard rubber mounts.. how much clearance should there be between the rail and pan???
Had this issue myself... you may try to do a search I had photos posted.... that anchor mounts that are sold as replacements are too soft... I went with the butler Performance mounts (Beefy as hell). However They will not work with hooker header too close on drivers side...
I went back and found your post.. I have hedman headers... right now I have 2 inches or more from my headers to the mount... I'm gonna try the poly mount...
This has been discussed many times over the years . I used the Mity Mounts and they weren't any better than the cheap ones for oil pan clearance. Ended up making some shims (about 3/16" thick as I recall) to put between the mounts which gave me enough clearance.
-=>Lee<=- Due to budget constraints the "light at the end of the tunnel" has been turned off!
Years back I was all set to replace mine with some Indian made ones I got form Ames. I couldn't budge the bolts to the block so I gave up. So it worked out for the better since the mounts I bought were probably crap. I've seen the manufacture of high end machinery isolation mounts. The rubber requires a lot of processing to fully densify it. I would bet the rubber in the mounts they sell is not the same quality.
did you go with the mity mount or the poly mount??
I did poly mounts... 198.00 if I remember correctly the mighty mounts were just anchor mounts renamed... I wanna say they poly Mounts gave me 1/2 inch or more off pan... as I'm sure you read my only issue was they ran too close to my hooker headers and melted a corner off
Shim here too. Easy enough. Just drill one hole in the center and cut them so they fit the frame mounts and you're golden. Cheap $10 motor mounts and the shims, of course, are re-useable.
Just to follow up. I replaced the mounts with the poly mounts from butler. Motor is a good 1/4 to 5/16 free now. Seems to be plenty of clearance with my headman headers. I'll keep an eye on it but it looks like one more project off the list!! Next up.. swapping my edelbrock for a qjet. Then it's back to inside stuff.
Was there any noticeable increase in vibration into the car switching from the rubber to poly engine mounts?

Thanks. I noticed a difference after just changing out the rear subframe mounts to solids in preparation for subframe connectors. I have not had a chance for a road test with the full connectors on as I had my painter install them (he had a lift) and it's still in his shop.
I am already set up to replace my solid wood steering wheel for a padded one due to hand fatigue from vibrations on long trips.
My 455 has a pretty thrumpy roller cam that I feel through the structure with Mitty mounts, so I wondering if a switch to poly mounts down the road is going to make me feel like I am driving a Jeep off-road.

I'm not sure.. my car is up on my lift and we have 4 feet of snow on the ground.. lol... I also did poly body mounts and I'm putting on frame connectors now...
You might want to have a mouth guard between your teeth when you take it out next time

I hope not.. ill be cranky!! brand NEW..... motor, trans, drive shaft, rear end, shocks front and back, coils, leaf springs, power disc brakes, sway bar, body mounts, control arms, upgraded steering box...... it better ride like a dream!!!
That's the problem with all these " upgrades" that make things tighter and stiffer. Sounds real good on paper but in practical application it can tend to bite you in the [censored]. For the most part much of this stuff is counterproductive to comfort and not necessary unless you plan on driving it hard on a regular basis. My car, I feel, is over the break point as far as not being a comfortable street car anymore. That's why I'm currently in the market for a vert that I can run in a more stock form just for cruising.
Ok a couple questions. One on topic and the other slightly of topic cause I posted it in the interior forum and got nothing and this topic seems hoppin! On topic, just how hard is it and at what cost is the EFI conversion? Where do I look to get started? Now off topic... I'm restoring/having restored a 69 Firebird convertible and when I got the car it was literally in pieces and I have no idea where all the original speakers were located and what size those speakers were. I'm pretty sure where they were and what size but I'm asking the experts on this forum because I know they will know positively exactly where and what size they were. My son is buying the system for this car and he wanted me to ask the experts what they would recommend for a "bad-[censored]" system and where to locate the amp and possibly some small subs and what type and size speakers to put in and where to put them. Thanks for the help!!

I'm still on the fence with the efi... I have it sitting in my wish list at summit.. MSD-2900... this is the radio I went with..RES-HB-401-03-93 it looks great.. I went with the standard center under dash speaker... 2 6x9 in the rear and a 12 inch sub/amp in the trunk... its plenty loud and clear over the exhaust with plenty of thumping bass...
Thanks jman01, sorry it took me so [censored] long to get back to this post and see your reply. I appreciate the response and gonna see what I can get in this beast!
