Just for grins I checked a couple of online autoparts vendors and they offer both the paper and bronze filters. Most Q-jets I've worked on use the bronze filter with a spring.
Yeah, that's my experience, but I thought at some carb rebuild place I read the bronze filter is for 2bbl and paper for 4bbl. Just double checking to make sure I wasn't running the wrong filter for 20 years.
(a) Pleated paper instead of sintered bronze in the 1-bble. carb. for manual transmissions and all 4-bbl. carburetors. Its on the bottom of the fuel section spec sheet. This subject is like some other things on our car that are impossible to determine whats right/wrong or were both used. If you go onto fuel and carb experts sites you see this: ***This is a pair of the sintered bronze fuel filters used in the Rochester Quadrajet 4 barrel carburetors. ***FUEL FILTER KIT/HOLLEY DUAL FEED OR 2ROCHESTER QUADRA JETS - ALL NEW WITH BRONZE REUSABLE FILTERS ***This is a pair of the 1 inch short paper fuel filters used on the Rochester Quadrajet 4 barrel carburetors ***CARBURETOR FUEL FILTER FOR Older ROCHESTER QUADRAJET OR 2GC'S. THE PAPER FILTER MEASURES 1.03 INCH IN LENGTH, OUTSIDE DIAMETER .72. On and on it goes......
IMO, the best filter is an inline filter. Remove the inlet filter & seal the inlet fitting once & for all, to prevent possible thread damage & leakage, in the future.
I've always used rubber hose & a NAPA 3033 or Wix 33033 metal filter. If you're scared of reg rubber hose, you can use FI hose. But, if you prefer fancy braided hose, there are fancy inline filters to match.
I heard you pick up 2 hp going from bronze to paper...
No, I'm not serious.
