Unfortunately that car was wrecked and parted out a year ago this past Dec. I've been on this site for 10 years now and just can't seem to go away even though we no longer have a FGF. Too many good people and friends on this site.
We now have a 67 LeMans 326, all original, matching numbers etc. Anyway, to your question on hood scoops, originally back when these cars were new ALL of them would have been the body color. They never came blacked out from the factory. The only exception being a black car. LOL
Good luck with your project...
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I didn't realize. Sorry to here that.
In Reply to the Posi question these are all my notes that I have kept on Rear ends
There were 3 different ratio 8.2 Pontiac 10bolt carriers for both single track & Safe-T-Track usage High ratio = 2.56-2.78 Mid ratio = 2.93-3.08-3.23 Low ratio = 3.36-3.55-3.90-4.11-4.33-4.56-4.88 Nova, Omega,Ventura, Apollo rearends. Some 71's used the 8.5 some the 8.2, you'll have to check. All 72-75 used the 8.5. All 76-79 with factory V-8 used the 8.5, the 6cyl. in 76-79's used a 7.5. All will bolt in.
I have a axle out of a 72 Nova in my 68 camaro. I got the axle for 30 bucks at the junk yard, i took everything out wire brushed and painted it. I stole the auburn posi out of my 90 full size blazer. In 89 the 10 bolts went to 30 spline axles so the carriers fit right in the old axle. I got moser axles for like $300, they are basically 12 bolt axles but the button on the end is smaller. I got all new bearings and new gears for like $200. If you are really on a budget you could get used gears and a used gm posi for cheaper. Stay away from the true track. You do not have to change any of the bearing carriers to run 30 spline axles. I doubt it would have rusted enough to be a structural concern.
As far as a direct bolt-in rear end where no mods are neccessary, other than maybe a rear u-joint swap, these will all fit; '67-69 Firebird, '67-69 Camaro, 10 & 12 bolt, '68-74 Nova & "X" body clones, Ventura, Olds Omega & Buick Apollo. Most common gear ratios to find are 2.56 to 3.08, but they were offered in 3.23 to 4.10, depending on year/model. Positraction, Limited slip, Safe-T-Track, are just different coporate names for the same thing.
The distance between perches on a 70-81 rear is 45 3/8" vs. the 42 1/2" on a 1st gen If you want to check the rear end to see if it will fit, the over all width is 60 inches and the spring perches are 42 1/2 inches from center to center.
Can also use 72-75 chevy - Nova olds - Omega pontiac- Ventura buick - Apollo The earliest you could get a 8.5 10 bolt is 1970...The only direct bolt in is the 72-75's though...
The 8.5 or 12bolt will also be 3% more efficient than the 9" as well
I was looking on ebay and saw a couple 8.5 posi out of suburbans do they fit a 1974 nova 8.5 rearend and some body said early chevelles are 30 spline. There's a few things you need to look at when making that decision:
1. How many splines are the axles you're using 2. Carrier bearing size 3. What ring and pinion gear ratio you are running. for instance, if you're running a 3.42 gear, you need a 3 series carrier. a 4.11 gear would need a 4 series carrier, and so on.
As a side note, I have blown up three different auburn pro series posi units, they seem to suck pretty bad. I have had REALLY good luck with the stock GM units and also the Eaton posi units. The trucks used the Governor Lock, which is fine for a stock truck, but not for a high performance car. There are too many small, weak parts in these. The '71 to '81 Camaros and Firebirds used the Traction Lock, which was pretty good, but getting hard to find. There is a new Eaton for the 8.5, which is very good. The Auburn is junk, don't mess with it. It was used in the SS Impala and some of the later car rearends.
