I would like to add an additional transmission cooler to my 1968 turbo 400 car. Has anyone else done this? If so did you run it in line with the existing cooler or did you bypass it and just run the cooler by it's self? I was thinking with some of the 400-400 overheating problems that maybe taking the hot transmission fluid out of the radiator might help a little. I have a good size cooler but I'm not postive on how I would want to mount it or run the lines. If you have done this or have any pictures can you post what worked best for you. Thanks
My 400 coupe had this added by the PO. One more thing for me to add to the junk pile. It had a seperate cooler (stuck in front of the radiator) with seperate lines to the trans.
Some day you should stop over and see what a mess he made.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. I put one on my 1st car, a '70 Mustang. I connected it up in series with the existing OEM tranny cooler at the bottom of the radiator.
There was a similar setup on my FGF when I bought it. That setup got canned.
You do realize that this cooler mounts in front of the radiator? If you have cooling issues, I don't now how putting something in that restricts air flow through your existing radiator AND dumps heat into that same radiator air flow is going to help much.

I plan on stopping over real soon to pick up my pile of parts.

I wasn't sure where I was going to mount it yet.I was thinking of going a little lower and putting it in front of the lower valance knock outs.
I have a 350 converter in the 400 right now. I will more than likely put a higher stall converter in the car down the road. I just want to get everything mocked up before it goes in for paint. Which that is a long ways off also.LOL
I have a 2800 stall behind my aluminum head 455 (TH 400). All I have is a Rodney Red radiator, a stock 7 blade fan with clutch, and a fan shroud.
As I am too working on a repaint, the 400 model bottom baffle, radiator and mastic fillers are not installed yet.
No cooling issues whatsoever in this blazing OK summer heat.

If you plan on running a looser converter in the future then go ahead and install the cooler. Heat is the number one killer of trannys and a loose converter just shears the fluid making alot of heat. I put mine in front of the radiator and I dont have any cooling problems. When I did work on the cooling system I basically duplicated the factory a/c car set up. If everything else is in place and doing what it should, that tranny cooler in front of the radiator isn't going to make much difference in engine temps in my honest opinion. I'm running a true 10.5:1 compression 434 with iron heads and I run around at about 190* in 100* weather and I suspect thats just where the fan clutch really starts getting solid.
