Has anyone chased down the correct (stock) rear speaker placement - installation for a convertible? I remember it discussed here years ago, but didn't save the link. The search area did not help.
My '68 4 speed came with the rear speaker - fader option, but the wire is just lying in the well with no signs of the original speaker or enclosure.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I second that request... My car had the original console 8-track w/rear speakers in the convertible well, but I can't seem to figure how they attach. Tech manual diagram shows what looks like a triangular box (cardboard, I assume) around each speaker, using the special mounting screws (sold as repops)to attach to the rear bulkhead; however, the repop catalogs sell simple carboard "trays" that only look like the top part of the original "box". Photos would be helpful, if anyone has them.
(Sorry to jump onto your topic, 68tpls400; I've been putting my stereo system in over the past few weeks and had been meaning to send the same cry for help...).
There would have only been one rear speaker. fgf's only came with the dash speaker, and the option was for a single rear speaker. Looks to be near the passenger side rear somwhere (like the coupes). But I don't see signs of anything being mounted anywhere back there. Blue wire with the correct dpeaker clip is just lying back there (waiting for someone to hook her back up)

Silly me, of course, assumed that there would have been a matching speaker/housing assy on the driver's side. It appears not... Either way, I'll probably put one on both driver and passenger side.
Thanks, but I'm an anal, keep it stock, kind of guy. I did watch that earlier thread. They did a nice job.

Thanks. That's the same diagram Jeff provided. I am still hoping someone has a picture of an actual installation.

Thanks for the reminder, Neill. I thought that I had seen both speakers before; should have scanned the manual further (again...). Still hope to see what exactly the housings look, if someone has pictures of an original installation. The cardboard panels I bought from Classic look like cardboard lunch trays with all four of the edges stapled together to make the raised edges; if you were to assume that these parts were only the top mounting surfaces of the housing, one long edge would have to be folded up and the opposite long edge would be folded down to look like figure 15-13. Can't see a simple way to attach them that makes sense and, even though I'll be using new speakers, I'd like it to look as stock as possible.
Original 69FB vert optional speaker enclosure still in the car. I am looking for a replacement wire that goes from the right side of this enclosure (the wire lead is in the trunk) to the replacement speaker. The speaker has TWO leads which I will assume one is for power and the other is for a ground. If anyone knows where I can at least find the correct "connector I will fashion my own power and ground wires to make it appear correct it would REALLY help.
If you guys need pictures of the replacement OE speaker I have let me know.
I'm going to have to work on installing a rear speaker soon. I need the speaker, housing and bolts. I have a good original speaker wire. Any recommendations on good replacement for the rear? I need a front center dash speaker too.
I saw Ames has a duel voice coil rear but it is not for OEM radios.
I have used them many times and I highly recommend them.

They can restore your originals to original specs. I think it's in the neighborhood of $140, depending on what they find wrong. If you tell them what you have, they can tell you exactly which speakers match OEM. I'm sure I have their part numbers around here somewhere, but I'm thinking the repop front speaker is around $35, and the rear is around $50. If your radio still works, you could use it 'till it dies, or just restore it now. I think they can do conversions, but I haven't gone that route, so I'm not sure. They have done a half dozen radios for me now.
I have one extra original '68 AM/FM I could part with for the right price. They are almost impossible to find these days.

That would be nice. PM me a price. Does it work already or does it need restored?
I am interested in your AM radio if you are wanting to sell it.

I sure would like to see those convertible speaker housing made in sheetmetal. I would think there is a untapped market there for someone to make some money.
I plan on sending a AM radio to http://www.turnswitch.com here real soon. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do.
As for the dash speaker. IMO they all suck. My brother has the kenwood dual speaker in his front dash and I have the single cone dual voice coil in mine. I think mine might be a little bit better, but like I said they both suck in that they can't handle much power or base.
I like the idea of hiding the speaker in the kick panel vents but I kinda like my vents operational. A factory looking rear speaker in my convertible is high on my list now.
I just don't see ever getting great sound while keeping a factory look in a convertible.
I have the rear speaker option in my 4 speed 'vert. With the top down, that option is 120% useless. Front speaker only in Scarlet works just fine for me. But I'm not the kind of guy that rattles the neighbor's windows when I drive by with the radio on either...

Using the cardboard as a template you could make one in your garage with just a few tools and not much experience. There must have been a reason that they used what they did?
Picture contains what you'll need to replace everything for the rear speaker option. I bought the rear speaker OE AC Delco replacement from YearOne approximately 10 years ago. I aid around $70 which I still think is way too much for a single crappy 6x9 made in Mexico. Label is on the box. The speaker grill comes unfinished and I used a low gloss black that I have used on many other items throughout the car that matches factory paint. The cardboard enclosure has the flaps outward when you get them as I believe that is the way that the Camaro has t installed. You can see from the earlier picture of my 69FB that they are folded inward.
If anyone knows where I can find a speaker connector so I can wore this up it would be a big help.
Got one for sale? What I am looking for is the wire that connects to the lead inside the trunk on the right and then goes to the speaker. From the connector there should be a ground wire going a short distance. I have no idea what it looks like but sure would like to have one so I could get everything installed and working.
My original wire just has the one plug in terminal. The diagrams show the speaker base grounded by the screw to the frame. So originally it would not have the ground jumper unless your 69 is different then my 68. I've not looked into the 69.

I looked back at the diagram and you're right there is a separate ground wire. I went back out to go look and low and behold the ground wire is still there. With all of it hidden up in there I never see it.
If you would like to sell the wire/connector shoot me an email.
Sorry Marc I don't have one for sell. I was trying see exactly what you were asking for because I see the nos radio wire quite often on ebay if I spot it again I'll pm you a link.
I didn't know they sold this as a kit. I will have to see if this is still available.
Was the rear speaker option only for one speaker in the back?
Also It looks like there is very little room for a bigger magnet speaker since the enclosure is so shallow?
On a side note I talked the guy from http://www.turnswitch.com super nice guy and loves to talk about old radios and cars. I was blown away by his knowledge. A great source of info on years, options and what works best for certain setups.

Sorry but its not a kit. In the picture I am showing everything that is needed to bring my car back to stock or what was installed from the factory. Sorry I wasn't more clear. I have been collecting all of the parts to reinstall what my stepfather threw in the trash in 1984.

You're killing me! lol
If you do see one please email me and let me know. Otherwise I am looking at pieces (connector) to complete the project. If I find a connector that will simply work I am going to use it as it cannot be seen anyway.
