Some times starter won't engauge unless I move around shifter around. I have new starter ,solenoid, starter switch. The backup lights work so no issues with that switch. I can remove the key ok when in reverse. Sometimes When I turn the key no response, if I move the shifter back and forth while in reverse I can start it. Is there anything in the steering column that could cause this? Please help. Thanks
I've tried every thing I can think of or has been suggested. I give up. Is there anyone in the Chicago suburbs who can come out and help?
You don't say what year or what car you're working with but generally no, moving the shifter around should have no effect on whether the starter spins or not. You should have a neutral safety switch somewhere interrupting the ignition circuit unless the clutch pedal is depressed.
X2 what Robert said. No neutral safety switch on a 69 4spd shifter or in the column. It’s above the clutch pedal, easy to see. After 50 years that switch would be a good place to start your troubleshooting. Also, are you pushing the pedal all the way down when starting? Have always had to mat mine almost to the floor.
I'm in the NW suburbs area. I have a 69 convertible with 4 speed (currently apart) I have an original switch I am going to install and could help explain this further. There are two wires (1 clip) that the switch connects with and should be in the area if you can find them. There is a reproduction switch but they are different style, but functional.
You are welcome to call me if you wish. Send me a message and I can provide my cell phone if you want. Also since your local, perhaps you are a member of the Midwest Firebirds Club??? If so, I am a board member and we might have met before although I don't know all the members. If not no worries, just shoot me a note and you are welcome to call.
the purple wires go to the safety switch on the clutch. A replacement switch is not reproduced. Take a wire and connect the two purple wires at the plug and the car will start without the clutch engaged. It beats it sometimes not starting at all.
I’ve got the same setup on my 69 goat 4 speed. The outer sleeve of the steering column rotates when you put it in reverse. Try moving the sleeve by hand if it won’t start
