Hi this is my first time to this site. I purchased a 1969 OHC Sprint motor. I rebuilt the carburetor replaced the carburetor gasket. However, I think I have the wrong gaskets. The gasket does no cover the intake manifold correctly, there are gaps on the two sides that are no covered by the gasket (see pictures). This does not look correct to me. The gasket is a Fel-Pro 60061-1 The intake manifold is a 1969 sprint 9794232. Can anyone tell what is the correct gasket or is this normal?
That looks like my 67 manifold specifically the heat riser portion. For 67 you have to use a gasket and a metal shim. The gasket I used on my 67 was a Mahle G14579, Rock Auto has them. Take a look at Rock Auto (for the 67 Firebird) and you will see what I am talking about. Ames has the metal shims if your manifold is a 67.
Larry, thanks for the information. I will order the carburetor gasket from Rock Auto for the 1967. The 67 gasket looks like the right fit, but I am still confused because the numbers on the intake manifold 9794232 indicate that it is a 1969. Also, what is the metal shim for? According to the Pontiac parts illustrations they do not show a metal shim for the 67, 68 or 69?
For 67 it keeps exhaust gas from directly hitting the carburetor. So I am not sure I would use the 67 gasket without the metal plate. I am not as familiar with the 1969 designs meaning what keeps exhaust off the carb. If you look in the Pontiac catalog, it shows the same gasket is used for all motors in 1969 (V8 and L6). One of the V8 owners should chime in and see if their manifold looks like the one you pictured.,
You might want to give Jerry Woodland a call at 435-258-5660. He carries all kinds of OHC parts (Woodland Sports). I think he has a $20 minimum order and I know he doesn't like being called on Sundays. Super nice guy and very knowledgeable in the OHCs. As an example, I purchased an oil pump rebuild kit from him.
Larry I tried the 1967 Felpro gasket 60043 looks good on the 1969 intake manifold 9794232 but does not work with the carburetor Rochester Q-Jet 7029261. I have talked to Jerry Woodland, he also recommended the 1967 Felpro gasket 60043 but he also confused as to why the 1969 gasket does not work with the carburetor. Summary is: The Fel-Pro 60061-1 recommended for the 1969 intake manifold 9794232 does not fit correctly on the manifold but works with the Rochester Q-Jet 7029261 The 1967 Felpro gasket 60043 works on the 1969 intake manifold 9794232 but does not fit correctly or recommended for the Rochester Q-Jet 7029261.
I can tell you my carburetor also does not cover that outer right portion of the exhaust channel. But the stainless plate kind of keeps it all together. Not sure that helps. One time in the past I installed my carburetor without the stainless plate and had exhaust blowing out past the carburetor. So I know for a fact, on the 67s you must install the plate. My confusion is why it isn't also required for the 68s and 69s.
