Looking for some help here. Have not ran my 68 400 Rochester 4bbl for about 3 months Drove it in to my garage and have not started it since.
Went to crank it yesterday and it seems that I have no fuel to the carb. Will try to fire with some starter fluid but immediately die. I pulled the fuel line to the carb and cranked the engine with no fule coming out . I placed my thumb of the outlet and get very little pressure there.
This is a 2 year old rebuild with relatively no usage other than in and out of garage as I have-not finished the interior to date..
Having trouble accepting that the pump failed but more that possibly the ethanol has gotten to the pump diaphragm etc.
Was looking for some additional troubleshooting steps as to how I might isolate the issues and the the car started .
I did pour 5 gallons of fresh gas in the tank just to be sure.
Any help suggestions are always appreciated from this great resource.
If the fuel pump is old, ethanol will kill it. If it’s a relatively new pump it should be able to survive ethanol. Thank our government for shoving ethanol down our throats with no benefit whatsoever.
You just need to logically diagnose the issue. If the fuel pump is good then try sucking fuel from the tank somehow and see if something is clogged
Try disconnecting the pump inlet line to check if there is fuel reaching the pump. Try siphoning some gas out of the tank from the inlet line. You can use a vacuum pump, or siphon pump to do that if you don't want to get a mouth full of gas. If there is gas at the inlet then your pump is most likely kaputski, If you can't get any gas out of the pump inlet hose then you have a blockage in the line or at the pickup.
agreed, ethanol is killing pumps and fuel lines and etc very fast
depends on where you got fuel and it's a crap shoot, it's not so much the govt it's big oil pulling a fast one to make cheap hi octane fuel
buy 87 and add Lucas Octane boost, the only real one left, this greatly reduces the ethanol in your fuel
I have started a ritual of 5 years, new pump and lines ...........now looking at going to Carter electric that is ethanol rated and dumping mechanical pumps period
Thanks guys for the advice. I did finally get fuel up to the carb through the feed tube. I figured I need to replace the fuel filter and wanted to get your opinions on what to replace with and anything else I should look at prior ore-installing.
First off it appears that the paper filter looks very hard and dry and also has no check valve on he end. Ive seen som many discussions about the paper versus bronze and check valve or no valve.
Does anyone have a the correct p/n for the replacement filter for the Rochester 4bbl
Lastly any thoughts on the carb prior to replacement the filter . Thought I would spray some Gumout in to the filter chamber just in case
