There were two different mounting styles used in the factory. I have never found a date or year changeover. They seemed a bit random. One type was speed nuts on the back side. So yes, you would need to remove enough of the inner panels to get access. (or door jamb louver combo) The other type was an expanding fingered insert. (kind of like modern plastic inserts for screws into sheetrock) These inserts pressed into the mounting hole from the outside of the car, and then the louver studs were pressed into those inserts. (friction fit) These are a bugger to remove and replace without scratching the paint. And are almost never reusable.
So you do not really say if you are re-installing your used ones, or going with new ones. The new ones are pretty much all attached with speed nuts, although you could likely silicone caulk (glue) them to the car. I found that a small dab of silicone or sealant around each stud also kept leaks out from around the studs too. I think the factory speed nuts had the caulk/sealant inside the speed nut to help with this. But the aftermarket nuts do not.

Thx Gents-- I'm replacing the old ones.... pitted badly. That qtr was pretty cancered, but not too bad really....all four corners had/have some minor issues.... working on it!
By the way... be nice... I'm not a professional! My welding certainly needs practice.

Gus I have an earlier post about the paint not matching... its still frustrating me. This was a temporary painting because I didnt want to drive around with gray splotches, but still should be closer.
