On my 68 convertible the retaining clips in the stainless trim that you show in the picture are completely separate from the removable cowl piece and are secured to the panel you show in your picture before the removable cowl piece is installed. It looks to me that someone was a little over exuberant with the putty/bondo and filled the holes. you should be able to feel from the backside where the filler is poking through and just re drill them and slide the clips to align with the original holes. If you can't locate the holes because metal was replaced in that area and are fussy about them being in the correct spots I can give some exact measurements, let me know.
The vertical positioning of my trim should be close, but I want to confirm as they need to be exact. The horizontal positioning may be less exact as the 8 clips can slide left or right. I don't understand the odd shaped slots right where the holes should be? Classic Industries sells the tapped screws. I picture would help if anyone has one.
Is the trim just attached to the cowl piece but you can remove the fenders with it in place? I need to do a fenderectomy and was wondering how all that goes together near the windshield
KC, the slotted holes in the clips should only be on the second clips in from the ends on both sides, so only 2 and are for fine tuning the adjustment. Are you saying you can't find any of the holes by feeling from the backside? as I said you will feel where the filler sqeezed through the holes unless all that metal had to be replaced. Sorry I can't do pics.
Bob s. No problem sliding the fenders out from under the molding, but will need to tape edge of fender if painted when installing to protect it. It's very easy to loosen this molding and put something under it to hold it up and out of the way. By removing the cowl panel the molding retainer clip screws are easily accessible.
kc if no one gets you pictures and you can't find the position of the original holes you can easily set it up by installing your cowl panel and sliding the molding snugly up to it making sure you have all the other windshield moldings mocked up in place for correct fit. then just mark the top edge of the bottom molding on the windshield either with yellow crayon or tape. Take everything back apart and line molding up with mark on windshield position clips horizontally and drill.
The cowl sits on the upper shorter part of the clip. Even with pics not sure how the lower molding is screwed/bolted to the car? Other looks show very small, possibly tapped screw holes (but difficult to see in pics).
Someone has to have a pic of this under their cowl...
