Replacing some emblems on my '68. Noticed the trunk letters and fuel door bird are on with acorn nuts, self cutting I assume. Is there a source for these as replacements? Can they be reused? I don't want to try and reuse them if there is a chance they won't hold and then mess up the studs on new emblems.
Also, on other emblems, you use regular self cutting nuts with a flange, correct? Is it advised to use ones with the mastic sealant? What sizes are used on emblems for a '68 Firebird? I think I will just end up buying an assortment, but I'm also tired of having loads of extra hardware around as a result of buying a big assortment or buying more than what I need because I wasn't sure what I needed in the first place.
My local Ace hardware store sold these in packs of 6 (I think) or individually. I did not use mastic, but just a personal preference. And yes, they can be reused, unless they get stripped.

If you can’t find locally, McMaster Carr carries the largest selection of weird fasteners I’ve ever seen. If I remember right, the “I” in the trunk letters uses a smaller nut.

I've never heard that one before. Pretty sure they are all the same.

Thank you both, will look into McMaster-Carr for these. I was aware of the company, didn't figure they'd carry these but if anyone would you'd think it could be them.
I stand corrected. The original nuts are all the same. The trunk letter kit I bought from Trim Parts came flange nuts. The flange was too big to clear the alignment pin on the letter “I”. Sorry for any confusion.
Would these be the same type of nuts that hold the scoops in place on the 400 hood? Going back together with mine and it originally had the basic hood on it

No, those are speed nuts, not acorns. Speed nuts kind of look like a sheet metal version of a regular nut and washer combo. Same type of nut that holds the tail lights and many other parts on our 'birds.

Looking over my '68 the only acorn nuts I've come across are on the trunk and fuel door emblems. I think they would be used on a 400 trunk emblem as well, don't have one of those.
