Hello everyone...
Getting a little confused on figuring out what block i got and eng...
I have a 1969 H.O. Bird that i just bought on 07/01/19 and seller told me it was a 400 engine now out of GTO.and all rebuilt.. and it has a 400 auto tran's

So i got the intake number of what i thought was 8754234 but most likely is 9794234,- im 100% possitive on last 4 digits...
Now on pass side of block below head it says, YU and best bet on reading numbers above it are 0401109
So if anyone can help it be great....I haven't got any casting numbers off the back yet... But seller told me it was a 400 engine..

Get the head code as well this one on top of the middle exhaust port to be like 16

Someone can look it up for you on Wallace Racing

"...Someone can look it up for you on Wallace Racing "

Or, you can get the block casting number & date code, & look it up yourself.

The only YU code 400 from the '60's was a '67 290hp 2-barrel engine, which did not come in a GTO. Block casting number was 9786133. The others were from '77 & '78.

But the YU code was used on some 350's & 455's, as well as the 400's. So, you need the block casting number & date code, from the rear of the engine, to make a positive ID. Those numbers above the YU won't help with your ID. I think they are just some sort of sequence number for the model year.

"...seller told me it was a 400 engine now out of GTO..."

A 2-barrel 400 was available in a '67 GTO, but it was rated at 255hp, not 290hp, with a code of XL or XM. The 290hp 2-barrel 400 came in big Pontiacs.
