I have a 1968 Firebird 400 engine that I have had for 20+ years. I bought it in California and it has been stored inside ever since. It is a YT 568612 Code (400 automatic), Block Casting 9790071 (1968 400), and Date Code B158 (Feb 15, 1968). It also has a Van Nuys (Los Angles) assembly plant code in the partial VIN 28L102428 stamped on the block.
I'm hoping this forum may have somebody on it that has this car or knows how to track down a VIN as I'd really like to see if the Firebird 400 car that this engine originally came in still exists and if the current owner would like this engine in order to have a numbers matching vehicle.
The car VIN should be 223378L102428 if it is a coupe or 223678L102428 if it is a convertible.I tried Pontiac Historical Society but they said they don't have data that could tell me if the car is still around.

Hi there,
The no. stamped on the block is the "Engine Unit no." YT 568612" Compare that to the billing history you get the VIN for the car. See attached
The PHS guys cannot search by "Engine Unit no.", however, it's on the build sheet /w VIN on the PHS report. The data is on mircofishe so it has to be searched manually.
Interesting info, I have wondered the same thing as I have a WT 389 from a 65 GTO I owned back in the 70s. It would be nice to see it reunited with the car I loved so much (and still miss)
That’s cool Bob. This 389 was the first engine I ever installed into my 69 bird in 1977. And I knew the two previous owners of the GTO from my high school. A year later I built a 67 400 for my 69, also from a GTO. Then gave this 389 to a friend for his 68 bird in 1979. The original 65 GTO came my way in 1984 and was later sold to another friend a few years later who also bought my 68 400 4 spd bird. In my 69 now are the heads from the 67 goat and the block from that 68 bird. When my friend past away a few years ago, his lady insisted I got the engine back knowing it was my old engine. Over the past 40+ years this lil’ 389 has really come full circle. I hope to find someone like your friend to get it to.
