I found a correct set of Rally II wheels for my '69 with front disc brakes. They need to be refinished as they currently have a light etching primer on the front and a little surface rust here and there. I'm looking for any info from someone who may have been in a similar situation. (BTW - I live in CA and my car is at my in-law's in WI. The wheels are here).
I can have the wheels dipped and blasted - that's easy. I was planning on painting them here using the kit from Ames or something similar, but the more I read about it the more it sounds like it just doesn't last.
I live in a pretty small place with no room for anything but a tiny air compressor, so painting them myself here is probably not possible. I can probably paint them at my in-law's place when I go to visit, but between the WI weather and the limited drying time there it might be hit or miss.
I figure that it would be wise to have an epoxy primer applied once they're painted. Anyone have any thoughts on that? I'm having a problem finding anywhere in the area that will do that.
Is painting wheels with a gun fairly straightforward? Is it something that can be done in a couple days with drying time? Or am I looking at a week long process to do all the coats?
I had mine powder coated the silver, then I hand masked them ( did not use the masking kit ) and used the spray can Charcoal from Classic, they came out good, but I think the charcoal from classic is a little light.
Did you manage to find someplace that could do the correct silver? Are you willing to share the cost for the powder coating?
the silver looks real close, I had a friend get the powder coating done for me, he has a lot of stuff done so he gets a good discount, I think all 4 cost me $200, they sand blast them before they coat them. The silver is the same as the Chevy Rally's, the name is argent silver, dull aluminum I think is the same. most powder coaters in your area should be able to get the color right
I agree. Do the powder coat. If your working with limited space and time powder coat is the way to go. Get them blasted and powdered all in one stop. Where in California are you? PM me if we live close enough to each other I can help you out.
Look online. There is a place near me, not near you, that will recondition, powder coat and paint rims. They do a great job and it is fairly inexpensive. I'm sure there are many such places. I never even knew it existed til my wife scuffed up her audi wheel. They made it look amazing for about $50.
I painted my Rally IIs myself using the kit and spray cans from the auto parts store. They look great but aren't holding up. When they start to bother me I'm taking them to this shop.
