What is a good product(s) and process to use on an original trunk with some dirt, rust, old POR, old spatter paint?
I've prepped it with wire brush, wire wheel drill, and stripping pads, but no way can I get everything off and in all the nooks and crannies to a consistent level.
Blasting is not an option and I don't mind spending some/many hours. I want the spatter paint to last.
I wouldnt over think it. When I did mine I replaced the entire pan in the trunk but the areas over the wheel wells I just cleaned up the best I could and then treated with a rust neutralizer. The spatter paint makes a rough looking texture so there is no need to try to make it look perfectly flat.

For what it's worth, I did mine with Eastwood Rust Encapsulator, then topped with 3m Rubberized Undercoating, then topped with AC Delco Black and Aqua spatter paint. The only thing I'll say is even if I tried to lay the can down on a "grazing" angle, almost parallel to the surface, I couldn't get the "long" splatters of aqua. I think if you REALLY want to get specific to true out of the factory, you'll need to get the aqua and spray it separately with an airless gun on a real thick tip setting. The cans we get are a mix of black and aqua, and, well, that's what you get.
By the way. If you have one of those aftermarket vinyl houndstooth trunk mats in there, take a look under it. Mine is gone because it was gathering moisture, and created a rusty film under it. Even though it was painted. They dont breathe, and through the humid summers hear, they can apparently collect enough condensation to create an issue...

And as nasty as this sounds, try soaking a rag with brake cleaner. Dont get it on your hands or in your eyes! it takes off just about anything it seems. I think its mostly acetone.
