New member here. So I bought my newest bird remotely with a bud's help using extensive video & other inspection. After finally personally driving it, it shifts like a truck...reeaaaaally long throws and not very streetable. Reverse also hits the inside of the console. So after my own examination and net sleuthing, it looks like I have a slightly later model Saginaw 4-speed maybe from a Chevy truck. I have not been able to determine if only the Muncie was available for my car. Some say yes, but nothing definitive. Can someone confirm absolutely?
I have tried to search the forums on this and other sites.
Saginaw visual evidence: steel case, linkage routing, GM 338935 -- late 70s, no? Or is there any remote chance it is original to the car?
These case & tail housing numbers I couldn't find info about: A26 1; 522B4; 6188 or 8819 (now looking at my picture upside down? lol)
If only Muncie, do I understand correctly that only M20 or M21 were used for the 326?
I want to keep the car as original as possible, the restoration has continued this way, possibly outside from this. All the literature I have seen says this car should have a muncie. EXCEPT I saw one post here or another forum that quoted the service manual, where it had a 4-speed Saginaw listed as possible option-- but maybe that was only for non-HO or 6-cyl birds? It's not clear
Anyway could use some help to move forward, thanks!

Get the PHS for your car. You send the VIN and they give you a copy of the original invoice that will tell you exactly what the car was when it was sold
Hi Bob, thanks much. So to confirm... based on what I posted above in terms of my observations, a) I have a Saginaw and b) it's dead wrong
I have the PHS doc package for the car already, doesn't mention transmission manufacturer. Only noted is order code 77F (4-spd floor), but not who built it.
Appreciate you reaching out!
