Anyone have suggestions for a good quality set of headers for a 76 400 with 6x heads thats going in a 68 bird? I like the looks of the ceramic coated ones but not sure which ones to get that will not be in the way of steering gearbox

I always used the Hedman 35270 headers in our 1st gens. The coated ones are 35276. They have 1 3/4" tubes.

Looks like right now you can get $30 off, by using the code SAVEMORE..

Do you think those will work ok for a later year motor like i have

All pontiac engines are the same just year specific for the car .

Yes.

The exhaust manifold bolt pattern is the same on most Pontiac V8 engines, except the 265 & 301.

And the outside dimensions of the 350 thru 455 engines are very similar, using the same motor mounts.

So, unless you have a late '70's block, which uses only the 3-bolt mounts, most any 350-455 D-port head engine should bolt right in & use the same headers.

The headers will bolt right up to your 6X heads.

The only problem you may encounter is if your heads do not have the end bolt holes for the exhaust. 1972 heads have the end holes missing and no room to drill and tap, some heads have the end holes missing but the boss is there so one could drill and tap the holes for headers. Most Pontiac heads will accept headers without any problems.
Some headers are automatic or manual specific as well as power steering or not. You'll find some that fit the engine and year of car, no problem.

Just my 2 cents... go with long branch manifolds. Headers on poncho motors are a PIA

I agree 100% on long branch manifolds for a street car, or anything under 500hp. On my previous mild 455, it dyno at 400hp with RAM manifolds and 409 with full length headers. That 9hp is not worth the trouble in my book!

For my strip car, I plan to purchase the headman 1.75" headers, not coated. Once I confirm the fit and clearance, will send in to someone like Jet Hot to have them coated. Supposed to be a lot better than the OEM coatings- so I have read...

I acquired some headers for my 69 goat and after a lot of wrestling I determined that it was impossible to install them with the motor in the car due to one of the bolts being impossible to reach. I put the logs back on and never looked back. When I got my bird it had rusty leaky headers and replaced with long branch and have been happy ever since.
