I have a 1967 Firebird that has a SBC fitted. The Chevy needs a rebuild and I would like to fit a Pontiac 400 instead.
Pontiac engines are like hens teeth in the UK and not cheap. My question is what other things will I have to change if I can find a Pontiac that I can afford. I know it will be different mounts and transmission, but what else would I need or can I still use the Chevy alternator, power steering pump, brackets ect.

You'll need the 4-piece frame brackets, which the motor mounts sit on. They are available used and repro.

The Chevy alt will work, but will need Pontiac brackets. The power steering pump will work, IF you can modify the brackets to bolt up to the Pontiac heads & line up with the other pulleys. You'll need all the correct pulleys for the Pontiac engine.

The Chevy trans will work, by using a simple adapter plate, made to mate Chevy trans with BOP engines.

The fuel pump & starter are on the opposite side, therefore will require different routing for the plumbing & wiring.

I Have found a Olds 403 for sale with a 4 speed box. its 79 block. is this worth considering ?

May as well stick with the Chevy. I can't think of a single advantage of a 403 Olds, over a 350 Chevy, unless your car came with a 403 Olds.

nope....and if after 71 year, consider any GM engine needs new heads and rework to have any power....I had a 72 Pontiac 400, but changed out heads and milled down to get a good CR....

ahhh, now youre talking....that' has been upgraded...that will work....heads are good....
