What does that fiber optic bulb socket wire thing go to? Mine was just hanging there ?
Also does anyone have a photo of the instrument cluster installed in the dash (along with lighter, clock, etc..) view ? I'm trying to figure out where the little fasteners and flimsy metal pieces go to (I assume they are some sort of grounding connections). Thankyou
I just found a photo of how the other end of that fiber optic light attaches to the ashtray bracket, so I see where it goes now. Still looking for a photo of the whole back of the dash, thanks.
This may help. I must apologize for the gross hack job done to the radio area. I'm pretty sure this was done by my brother when we were teenagers and my mother owned the car.
The flimsy metal bracket (ground strap?) should have a hole around the radio knob similar to the lighter. This was cut out during the stereo operation 25 years ago. As I disassembled the dash, I'm finding out why the gauge cluster wasn't working properly. The green wire is a ground which is not standard. I've tucked it up and left it there for the time being until I can get the dash reassembled and installed. I'll probably re-fabricate the missing hole around the stereo unless I can find a replacement for the ground strap
Question on the dash photo, the two small brackets that bolt to the top of the cluster, there are 2 small bolts there, any idea what they go to ? I have a few small wire mount tabs that maybe bolt up to those places ??
I have two of the hooks' but both of them are spot welded to the body. One on to the radio speaker mounting point, and another near the fuse panel (where the wires travel up to the dash).
I also have a spot welded strap that mounts directly to the firewall on the engine side. It would normally hide behind the booster, but it looks like the one in your picture.
The three, second from the left are the ones that mount to the top of the cluster and hold the wiring harness (if I'm remembering this right, it's been a while since I was working on that.) Long one on the right looks like the ones welded on the underside of the cowl. The others ??? There should be a diagram showing those in the assembly manual.
-=>Lee<=- Due to budget constraints the "light at the end of the tunnel" has been turned off!
I looked at the brackets that are currently welded to the cowl, there is one on the engine side near the brake booster, then there are approx. 5 that are welded to the inside cowl (behind the dash/instrument cluster) running from left to right (those probably hold the harness), the one in the photo is somewhat larger (heavy-duty) and as far as I can see bolts to something. Probably goes to the speaker attach bracket but not sure, I'm almost positive it came from around the dash/instrument cluster area because thats the bag it was in from 15 years ago. Any photos of the inside dash area would be appreciated. thanks

figured some of this out....the small clips on the left of the photo hold the heater control lens to the housing (2 on top, 1 on bottom), the 3 little brackets, as was said above, hold the wire harness part that goes over to the heater control/light (they attach to the heater control(2) and clock corner (1)). The washers I kinda guessed at that, looks like they are best served holding the cluster to the dash (just the bottom 2 bolts) and the one bolt attaching the heater control housing (right side bolt) to the dash panel. Also figured out the 2 brackets on the instrument cluster top, attach the plastic sleeve that goes over the harness that runs along top. Still looking for info on that metal loop bracket on the right of the photo.
Sorry for the late response 69, but looks like you've sorted most of it out. You are correct on the lens cover clips and the brackets that hold the wiring harness. The three washers are used where the thin metal ground strap connects to the instrument panel.
I'm stumped on the last item. I've made a quick look through the underside cowl area and engine bay. I've got 5 brackets under the dash that are welded, and the 1 in the engine bay beside the door buzzer that is also welded. Most of my car is disassembled, so I'll have a better look around and see if I can find anything close.
G, you should be able to buy a new ground strap right? Couldn't be more than a couple bucks.
I hope so. I just found out it was cut when pulling the dash apart. Had a quick look in the Classic Industries catalog, but didn't see anything. Shouldn't be too hard to find. Anyone know if camaros used this as well?
I couldn't see from your photo where the three washers go, it looks like there are more than 3 attach points for the thin metal ground straps. just wondering which points they go.
I found that extra wire loom holder in your pic today. Looks like it hold the loom in between the fuse block and the inst cluster. Somewhere near the astro vent elbow. Mine wasn't bolted to anything. Still around the loom though and just hanging.
