Looking to purchase a tag bracket (rear) for my '68 Firebird. Someone has one, but they are not sure if it's off a '68. If you have a '68, can you please take a picture of it (without the tag on)and email it to me so I can compare the pics? Thanks in advance for doing so. litevette@aol.com
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. My '68 is similar to the Gus68 picture except the lower screw anchor is raised and cylindrical. The factory originals are shown in the 1st pictrure. Some NOS replacements I found on EBay a few years ago are in the second picture.
Gus there has been such a long list of multiple designs and parts used within the '68s that I almost always preface my remarks with "my '68 came with" rather than "'68s came with".
Excellent! Thanks so much! I know that most of the sheet metal is new on my car, so I geuss that when the rear was replaced, they never drilled the holes. Now I just need to get thos plugs and rubber bumper thingies. Thanks again!!!
Was the rear plate on a 67 mounted the same way? I appear to have some sort of aftermarket plastic mount that secures to a metal bracket which is mounted to the rear bumper and my plate is attached to that. It looks nice, but I got the car that way and my plate is definately not attached to the metal where those holes are. So should my 67 be attached the same way as the 68 method that you just showed? I would guess yes, but want to know for sure... If so, I would like to change it back to the stock mouthing method.
Now I am baffled as to the "system" that currently holds my plate on.. I will have to photo it and post it here because I have no idea what the top metal bracket attached behind the rear bumper is now...
Yeah, they look like the ones on my front plate too. So I am just trying to figure out where to get the rear mounts then. Maybe this is why I have some sort of modified system that my rear plate is hung on with? I dunno... Still waiting for someone with a 67 to chime in.
Thanks Pete! I have that same black metal drop down attachment to my bumper and attached to that is a black plastic "bar" that my plate attaches to. Very similar to yours although mine is obviously a plastic repop that is similar to your silver piece.
Anyway, it would seem that the 67 rear plates do not attach the same way as the 68's do, so my question seems to have been answered then. I see that you do not have the holes that the 68 pictures show, but I do. The previous owner of mine must have replaced that rear body piece with a repop that has the 68 mounting holes.
Well to confuse things even more, I think the rear panel on mine has been replaced, so I don't know if the original had the holes at the bottom or not. I do think the bracket is original. (Closeup picture of bracket attached.)
I found a picture of another '67 that appears to use the lower mounting holes, so maybe there was a mid-year change? My car was built in the 1st week of April.
