I purchase a tranny vacumm line for my car and it didn't work. It was made for a th400 that has the modulator pointed strait back. I think the PY catalog show that pic.
Is there a place to buy a metal line that would work with the more common modualator that points out the side?
I could bend up my own but I like the formed ends on the factory ones.
Page 200 of the AMES catalog F15 shows a sketch of what I'm guessing my line would be used for. BUT on page 209 shows my line as FR761. You can see from the pic and the description(M40 I assume is the TH400 code) line shows going to the back of the tranny and making a U-turn.
Did the TH400 ever have a rear facing vacuum modulator?
Update I called AMES and they verified that the 67-72 th400 had a rear facing vacuum modulator.
The modulator on my '67 "PX" code TH400 comes out the side. The FR761 drawing looks the closest to me. I can post pictures of my somewhat bent-up line if you would like.
I would like to see what the line looks like on the top side of the motor.
That 180 deg turn on the end, looks like it would go to a rear facing modulator. Unless that end goes on top at the engine side but that wouldn't make much sense to me. The rubber line from the TVS goes to the back of motor along the side of the valve cover.
Also where does the line fasten? Does it bolt to the tranny bolt?
I called Inline tube who provide the lines to AMES. They faxed me a maunaul drawing fro a GTO. The line looks nothing like it. They also confirmed that no th400 had a rear facing modulator. They couldn't find a FB drawing and I couldn't fine much on the firebird site manuals.
There has to be some survivors that still have this line attached and has some pics.
Here are some pictures of the vacuum line for my 67 TH400.
The line along the valve cover has been bent (or un-bent?) - I'm not sure how it was originally. There is a U-bend at the carb end to line up with the carb vacuum port. 67s don't have the TVS. I'm not sure how other years are different. Note that the opening at the carb end has a restricted orifice.
The line is attached to a clip that goes under a trans mounting bolt.
I forgot the darn camera so I didn't get any pics but got the line in. I had to do some digging to find the clip but I found it. I had to do a little bending to get the line right at the tranny side.
Vikki - The U end goes to the port thats up high on the passenger side Q-jet right? That looks like the only spot for it. That would be a ported source right?
One thing concerns me is the loose fit the rubber hose has on the metal line. Looks like a good place for a vacuum leak.
