waiting on break lines, so, front and dr side rear drum breaks installed--- no fluid hooked up
Brakes ,Front seem to be ok Brakes rear, drivers side seems to be a little tight and adjuster plate is not in contact with adjustment wheel Is that normal? will that change once the system is loaded? If not, what should I look for to correct? everything appears to be in place
Brakes rear Pass side, not installed, pretty wet with oil or brake fluid, thought maybe cyc was bad.
What I found was play in the axle shaft, either a bearing or a journal. I have the seal and bearing I read in the chiltons book to determine the shaft style (C or Non C ) Que.: if I take the bolts out of the square plate mounted to the backing plate will I be able to figure out the shaft style?
Please help, Thanks, Bill V

Replace/rebuild all brake components (shoes, springs, seals, master, brake cylinders). Also, replace seals and axle bearings. You will need someone to take off and press the new bearings on. 4 bolts and she comes out. One of the types of axle requires disconnection within the rear diff. I don't believe this is an issue with Firebird rear diff's. Should be able to remove the axle after 4 bolts and cover plate. Chilton's is probably referring to a chev diff.
You will spend much less time debugging problems and probably save yourself more money in the long run.

If you buy all new parts and rebuild everything else your issues might go away.
Lot's of places selling complete brake systems for one reasonable price.
Pull the four bolts from the axle retainer and you need to "pop" the axle out of the housing. You can use a chain wrapped around a bar and attached to two wheel studs. Then jerk it out of there. What you will most likely find is that the bearing has spun on the axle shaft. In this case the axle is trash. If the bearing is still solid on the axle you can install a new seal in the housing and have a new bearing and collar pressed onto the axle. These are non-C clip rear ends.
Thanks guys, worst answer today, the bearing spun, journal is worn.
The brake system is going to be new when its done, everything. ordered the brake lines last week when the second one I touched snapped.
I will call your guy Gus and talk to him, is it possible to find a used axle here somewhere? or should I buy new from Ames?
Does any one on here have one? specs; 28 spline, overall length 31 1/2" journal dia. 1.378" outside of spline to outside of bearing journal 27 1/2" hub 6 1/4" dia
thanks bill v

Also, turn your drums if the old ones are still good.
The axel is back in finally. been real busy and haven't touched it for over a week.
Thanks to Gus68 for the info on where to get an axel. I used J.D Race for the part and he gave me a discount for being a member here on FGF. JD may be a memeber here.
Thanks again Gus.
I primered the hub
