I have a 69 bird that has a tired 73 400 connected to a stock 4 speed. I was planning on swapping to a Chevy 355 or 383 and was wondering what I would need to complete this. My 4 speed is the correct one for the car. So far from trying to search I think I will need -BOP motor adapter -Chevy Motor Mounts
But I am sure there is something’s I am missing so any help would be appreciated
A Pontiac 400 or above might be a better option, just saying. Then you won't have to mess with any of that stuff and you will have a torque monster (Plus you won't have to keep telling guys why you put a Chevy in a Pontiac)
Just my Opinion- nothing more.

I would keep the Pontiac motor if you could. I wish now that I did, but I did mine back in the late 70's If you do the SBC, you will need to change the starter, and alt. wiring as they are on the opposite sides, change the motor mount frame mounts. and when you do there are two different ones for the small block, just make sure the motor mounts to the motor match the frame mounts. You will also need all the acc. brackets, pulleys, and a chevy starter. as far as the clutch instead of using an adapter just get a chevy bell housing , and clutch linkage. Depending on which brand of headers you use you might have to change the steering linkage. I had to with my headers as the linkage rubbed on my headers. Everything you need will be for a 69 Camaro, or 68-72 Nova. So as you can see it is a lot of work and parts to change. It would be cheaper to rebuild your 400 and keep it all Pontiac
If you insist on the SBC you can message me and I will help you with it
Actually I have no objection to keeping it Pontiac, but do want to make more power so if I can open this up to any other suggestions to add power. Motor is a 73 400 with 7K3 heads, needs a rear main seal as that is starting to drip and also has a leak from where the spin on oil filter is at the rear passenger side (not sure if thats stock). The motor has good compression, maintains good oil pressure, does run well (bought the car in another state, flew down, drove it 400 miles home) but just feels sluggish. I do not want to go LS1/X motor personally thus why I was looking at old school SBC. Any ideas are greatly appreciated and thank you for your input thus far
Agree with the other guys, if you already have a poncho 400 it will be far cheaper, faster and far less headache to get all the power you need by choosing heads, cam, etc. for the pontiac foundation that already fits your car. IMO. Its a sin to put a Chevy into a pontiac!!!!!!!!!!
add more power?? add in a 455.....my buddy did, and added 455 emblems to the 400 hood...gets lots of questions about how 'rare' that was...LOL
Same plan for me. The 490 HP is enough for me to put subframe connectors on the car.
