I bought a set of pre-bent transmission cooling lines for my 455/TH400 69 Firebird. When I crawled under to change them I got a nasty surprise. It looks like it will be very difficult to get the old lines off the TH400. Worse, If i manage to get them off, it looks virtually impossible to put the new ones on. This is because everything is in a very confined space. Has anyone done this laying on your back on the floor with the front end on Jack stands? If you have could you please tell me what you did to make the switch? Thanks, Doug
Hi Doug, Yep, this is not a fun job..! Best done with the engine out.
If I recall I had to remove the header and the wheel to allow for some freedom to manipulate the tubes into position. Unfortunately I had to re-paint my oil pan after everything was said and done. Also try to elevate the car [both ends] as high as you [safely] can. And I emphasize safely! If possible use a tube/flare wrench - a standard wrench may round or damage the soft tube nuts.
When mine were shipped they didn't plug the ends, so I had to flush them before installing. I suppose this is a good idea anyway. Good luck...
