Looking for feedback regarding usage of the 7028277 Carb. as originally equipped on '68 Firebird RA1 4-speed cars.
I came across one of these carbs. but instead of the ID #'s being stamped onto the left side of the body, there is a round tag with the #'s embossed onto it.
I am not a carb expert- If you can get ahold of Banshee he has one for sale, and can also help with the location of the numbers. From what I recall the 7 digit numbers are on the baseplate, air horn and bowl. The 7 digits are found in a small circle about 3/8" in diameter like in your picture, but are also straight on other areas like the left side you mention. Sometimes you will see a carb that has partial stamping, and it may be a 7028277 that was damaged and had to use other number carbs as a doner. Very hard to read if carb is dirty. Do not use a brush or push real hard to clean. Use brake kleen or carb and choke cleaner first or Dawn and a toothbrush. I can't remember who I got this info from on the forum, but it was probably 68tpls400, Banshee or Harold as they helped me find quite a few parts and such when I did mine.
I got lucky, Cliff Ruggles eventually tracked one down for me - but they are a bear to find and VERY expensive. Just my 2 cents- get pics of everything before you buy and verify it. If you can't get a 100% 7028277 carb, then negotiate the price based upon what is there.
These have plagued members here for years, and there is actaully a poem written about it by a member a long time ago. I think I reposted it a few years back. If you search that number on this site you will get some more info and a chuckle out of that poem.
Good Luck!

John, Just saw your post over on perf years. Search in the 1967 info section of this site, here is what is listed for carb numbers for 1967:
Carburetor Identification Codes
Code Type Engine Comments 7027071 326 Manual 7037071 326 Manual W/AC 7027062 326 Automatic 7037062 326 Automatic W/AC AFB4243S Carter 326 H.O. Manual AFB4245S Carter 326 H.O. Manual W/AC AFB4246S Carter 326 H.O. Automatic AFB4248S Carter 326 H.O. Automatic W/AC 7027273 400 Manual 7037273 400 Manual W/AC 7027277 400 Manual Ram Air 7037277 400 Manual Ram Air W/AC 7027272 400 Automatic 7027276 400 Automatic Ram Air
So, to answer your question- yes 1967 RA1 did use a different number carb. In 1968 the RA1 and the 400HO both used the 7028277 as there were no 400HO's in 67, only the 326HO.
Hope this helps.
