Right! I know I've greased speedo cables before...You pull it out the casing, lube it up, replace it.
My speedometer bounces around a bit, and it leaks fluid at the connection at the tranny(just a little). I figured I'd replace it.
If you remove the transmission cable at the tranny, fluid will leak out of the speedo gear housing.
I used the driven gear from my TH400...now in my 700r4. Could that be the issue regarding the leak?
Looks like the oil is pumping up the cable and then flows back and leaks out. Do you have the plastic speedo gear installed? It must have to seal somewhere at the tranny end.

No O-ring with the cable, but the housing has a big O-ring that seals up the transmission, and the shaft that engages the speedo cable has an O-ring that keeps fluid from creeping out into the cable. I know the big on is replaceable, but the inner one....???

Right on ... maybe they will have the size in one of those muti packs?
Do not know if this is what you might be after but the gm part number 1240382 just popped into my head. Let me know as it has been 15-20 years since I was in the parts business,
the inner one is a seal not an O-ring, and a lot of times the shaft on the plastic speedo gear gets a groove worn in it from the seal, so it is best to replace both. If you have a good tranny shop close to you they should be able to sell you the outer o-ring and the inner seal. The inner seal is replaceable but a pain sometimes, a lot of times it is worth just buying a new housing with the o-ring and inner seal installed, just remember on TH400's there are different housings for the different number of teeth on the gear, there should be a set of numbers on the outer side of the housing, just make sure if you get a new housing you get one with the same numbers
There is no o-ring or seal inside the speedo cable, no need for one if the speedo gear is sealed
It's not uncommon for the seal around the speedo gear to wear a groove in it meaning a new seal will not work. I got around this by stacking 2 seals on the old speedo gear (there is enough room). This causes the new seal to ride up higher so it mates to a new area on the gear. Worked for me, no leaks.
Thanks for all the input. The housing is new, as is the large O-ring (actually, Monster Transmission sent me another housing when I complained about the leak). The driven gear has less than 2,000 miles on it, and didn't leak in the TH400 from which I removed it...I replaced it in the TH400 to get my speedo closer to correct.
I'll check that inner seal mentioned above.
